In my first year I had about 15 hours of lectures and seminars a week, but I think it increases in the second year.

In the first semester I had 6 hours a week
In the second semester I had 4 hours a week
however the amount of reading i was supposed to do was supposed to bring it up to 40 hours a week
i did about 2 hours of reading a week and passed the year :D

UNiversity is the same as a full time job.

You are expected to make up your study in independent study if you do not have a lot of contact hours. best work out where that library is.

I know some people who have like 7 hours of seminars/lectures then the rest is independant study.

in my final year i had 4 hours of contact time a week in the autumn, and 2 hours of contact time a week the rest of the year.

but in my spare time i had to come up with 50,000 words. drafted, and re-drafted, and re-drafted. and that's not including commentary on my work, logbooks, analysis or critical essays.

you will be in for like 12-15hours a week, and will probably have a day off! 40h=if you do LOADS of study, which noone does, especially not in 1st year :)

Depends on the subject you do, really. A subject such as English, History, or anything based on literature, you can expect to have to do a lot of research, reading, essays and basic crap like that. If you want a good degree out of it, you are going to have to put in the hours
However, mathematical degrees have a around 15-20 hours contact time, and just "homework." Not much research, just answering a series of questions. And if you can discipline yourself to do the work as soon as it is set (as I can), you can expect to have a lot of time for socialising
