Funnily enough, googling for ebooks comes up with 10,600,000 results........

Is "eBooks" just a posh name for PDF files?

Not reallly. PDF files are often used for ebooks because PDF files are useful for including pictures, hyperlinks, etc.
An ebook is really any file that contains the contents of a book/magazine. It can be a PDF, or a Word document, or just a plain text document. But PDF is just about the most popular format for completed documents.

Like so many things, eBooks suffer from a format war.

It all depends on what you want to read them on (ie pc, phone, pda or even printoff) and also if you're willing to pay.

You can get loads from Microsoft, but you wouldn't want to. But for the best you should go to either MobiPocket, http://www.mobipocket.com who have loads of free and premium ebooks and comics.

Theres also Memoware, http://www.memoware.com who are similar but have many more free ebooks in almost every format.

It also depends on your taste. If it's sci-fi, I've got a rar file with over 300.

Oh, and theres FictionPress.com, http://www.fictionpress.com for thousands of stories written by average Joe's (including me).
