Oooh, I volunteer at Oxfam Books and we're always crying out for books of all varities :) But if there isn't one in your area then any charity shop, hospital ward (with longer-stay patients especially), old people's home (providing the books are suitable, ooo-er!) will be very grateful for your charity!

If they are in good condition, consider taking them to your local library. Thats what Im in the process of doing with all my childrens books-our library are only too happy to take them if theyre in good condition, and that way they can be enjoyed again and again by people. :)

If they are in good condition then drop them in at a charity shop or your local hospital- recentl;y I dropped off a load of old childrens' books and games for the Childrens' Cardio Unit at the Freeman Hospital.

If they are old and tired then many recycling centres and household waste sites will have bins for you to place them in for recycling.

you have to understand ...they are not a local rubbish collecting point.
it may well seem like a reasonable tatty book to you but ...they know what they can and can't shift back into the comunity and make a couple of bob ...with limited space and overheads.

but if they are getting it for free...they could always chuck it if it doesnt sell. I dont mean a damright falling to pieces book but old books with that old book smell a few bent pages and some discolouration.
they still should be grateful, especially a hospital. Ill people arnt going to expect brand new books to read

but they have to set a standard ...it's not a matter of being unapreciative.
how do you suppose they would chuck it in the rubbish ...they could end up with thousands of these things ...your putting undue pressure on them instead of helping anyone.
they know what they are doing.
let them eat cake comes to mind.

I see your point, Blahx2, but where I volunteer we just can't shift books that aren't in pretty good condition. People just don't want to buy them, and understandably in my opinion. We don't turn away perfectly good, but old, copies of books however...it's just when they're falling apart or have been repaired with sellotape that we don't put them on sale.

Don't know about other charity shops, but when someone comes in with a box or bag of books, we don't send them away with the crap ones. We take them all, sort them and the unsuitable ones are usually recycled. So it's not as if the shops aren't grateful for them.

As rolly said, they won't sell if they're tatty, and they aren't rubbish dumps. It's the point of a charity shop afterall, to sell them to make money. It's kind of wasting everyone's time otherwise, don't you think?
