His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

A Certain Age by Rebecca Ray

When I was on holiday 2 years ago I read the Paul Ferris Conspiracy book. But I don't know if that's the title. Worth a look. :)

Any book from the Harry Potter series... though it would be best to read the first book first. Great books :)

I really liked Popcorn by Ben Elton but really couldn't get into anything else he's ever written. Shame really as he's a funny man.

Should be in entertainment really, so I'll shift it in a bit but as to good reads I'd recommend -

Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
    Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

and as already got mentioned Pullman's trilogy,

oh and the always superb Stone Junction by Jim Dodge

a child called it by - dave peltzer

very moving and thrilling book about a boy who gets treated like shit on the bottom of a shoe and his mum makes him sleep in the cellar and eat dog food and loadsa other crazy crap, its real horrific.

its part of a trilogy (not sure if that works for books) but there are three parts of his life:

    a child called 'it'
    the lost boy
    and a man named dave

all very good but the first one was the best by far.

i just started that the other day - it's a really interesting read. definitely one of the better books for young people out atm.

and for summer-type reading, you can't go far wrong with 'captain correlli's mandolin' by louis de bernieres (don't be put off by the shit film! the book is a million times better), 'the lovely bones' (alice sebold) if you haven't already, you really should, or 'stargirl' - not sure who it's by, but it's a dead interesting book.

What kind of book do you want?

I could recommend lots. For example Whit, or The Bridge, or practically anything by Iain (M) Banks, lots of Pratchett books, The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde and such. But it depends what you like.

I just read a really good book called Lucas - I think its by Kevin Brooks - its in the young adults section.

Not that sort of Girl by Mary Wesley - infact anything by Mary Wesley really.

Also I can highly recomend the princess diaries - very good and funny

But yes it does depend on what sort of book you want

I don't know what kinds of books you read, but here are my all-time favourites. I've read both of them on vacation, and I had a nice time -much to think about.

"Uncle Petros and Goldbach's Conjecture", by Apostolos Doxiadis

    "Sophie's world" by Jostein Gaarder

Man, I'm a big Anne Rice fan as well, but you can't say that Buffy's shit. Well, you can, but you'd be wrong. It has some truly amazing moments along the way, which is why so many millions of people love it so much.

That suddenly appeared on my desk one day when I got back from a week away. I thought it was a book of magic tricks at first, and I never thought of picking it up. I just assumed my brother left it at home by mistake, but if it's recommended I might read it. :)

My fav book ever is Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay - so amazing, so so amazing. It's a fantasy book, but without the cliches. Well I guess it has some. But it's completely amazing - the characters in it are so developed and you are still asking yourself what you really feel about the characters at the end of the book - no black and whites - just a million shades of grey brought to you in technicolor. Hmm rambling now, but it's amazing.

Got that book when I was 12, and it just made a huge impact on me.
Been 6 years since, and the lessons of philosophy it gave me were so valuable, that I am still refering to it today.

I read it a couple of years ago, after seeing the movie. I was interested in philosophy for years before that, but I didn't know.

Added, for Tink: If you only want the book for the plane, then this one might be too long. Except you'll be flying for 12 hours maybe.

Most of the above, and anything by Phlippa Gregory or Jeanette Winterson, Flying Under Bridges or Whistling for the Elephants by Sandi Toksvig, How the Dead Live by Will Self, The Glass Palace by Amitav Ghosh... is that enough? Fairly diverse mix there.

Also 1984 by George Orwell is a good book, infact one of the best books i have read
