European Parliament Elections Thursday!

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Ok guys tomorrow (today probably as well by the time some people read this) is the date for the elections for you to use your vote to decide who you want to represent you in the European Parliament. Basically it goes like this:

The Country is divided up into a number of regions.

Each of these regions gets to vote for a number of MEP's (Members of The European Parliament) to represent them.

The system used is proportional representation. The number of seats a party gets is directly based on the percentage of the vote they get. (For example 50% in a 4 seat constituency means 2 seats)

You vote for the Party you want, not individuals.

Votes are counted and seats are allocated.

I beg of you please use your vote. Dont give me that 'Oh my vote doesnt matter anyway' and 'They are all the same' crap because it just wont cut it with me. Each of the parties has a different set of policies. Dissatisfied with how the government is doing things (Iraq?) Then here is your chance to show it. Furthermore A low turn out would give the Far Right Extremist AND Rascist British National Party seats if they secure enough of the vote. Do you want these thugs to represent you in the European Parliament? No? Then get off your arse and vote. The higher the turn out, the less chance the BNP will gain seats.

Also donr forget that there are numerous local council elections tomorrow as well as the elections of the Mayor of London and the Greater London assembly.

I will leave you with this, if you do not use your vote. What right do you have to complain about what the government is doing when you could not be bothered to go and have a say in who represents you in the first place.

Please do the right thing tomorrow and use your vote

Thank You

:)

Hear hear! I'm afraid to quote a government sponsored ad campaign but 'if you don't do politics, theres not much you do do'. Politics effects your life every day so use your vote!!

I've already voted by post though - two weeks ago, so it's hard for me to get too excited!

I think he was trying to encourage some people who are entitled to vote but wouldn't usually bother.

If he'd posted this in P&D he would merely be telling people who are already interested in Politics (and already know about the elections and stuff and probably already decided who to vote for) which would make it a pointless post :p

    Agree.

What is the point of it being in P&D. Most of us are already politically active. This was aimed at those who never visit this forum...

Yeah I got mine ages ago actually, I think the hype is a bit over the top really, everyone I know got theres frankly, and it really isn't very complicated, just the Lib Dems and Tories trying to score points i think.........

Yeah, I figured that. Knew that ladymuck would try to make something from it as well.

Personally I have normal voting process here. I'm happy with it and personally don't see the need for postal voting across the board. It's not like voting normally requires massive effort...

But plenty of other people don't think like that, if the turnout is higher in the postal areas then it is a good thing in my eyes.....

Part of me says if it's too much effort then perhaps they shouldn't have a vote at all...

If people are unable to get to a polling station then postal votes and proxy votes are available.

I see what you mean but I do think that higher turnout needs to be encouraged by some way or another.

A lot of people do have the worng atiitude, i think people need to be made to realise how important voting is but it is difficult, if it is made easier then more will vote.......

Oh, I understand why it's being done, and support the concept.

Doesn't mean that I can't hold the "lazy" people in contempt though ;)
