Morning-after pill

The morning-after pill will probably be available from chemists without a prescription from the 1st of January onwards. It will only be given to over-16s.

Is this a good idea? Will it prevent unwanted pregnancies or will it promote unsafe sex?
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

I don't think it will. I don't know personally but i've heard that the morning after pill makes you feel quite ill, so that alone will probably be enough to put people off taking it!

I think its a great idea and even think it should be availadble younger than that. Its not gonna encourage girls to have sex, in my oppinion, and at least if they do (and they arnt carefull) they aint gonna end up pregnant. I think thats its important girls realise they cant use it as a form of contraception though, and that its only there for a last resort when u have been silly.

I think that this is a good idead because a lot of females of all ages will benefit from this especially when people have been safe and used condoms but they have split.
But I also think that a lot of people will take advantage of it as well.
A lot will be with a lad one night and not have anything and will just think oh well i can always get the morning after pill and its a lot more accessable for them to do this now.
I do think it will stop a lot of teenage pregnancies, I've got a mixed opinion on this because it is bad for some reasons whereas in other areas it is a really good idea, like they say though time will tell.

QUICK QUESTION: I heard that they were £20 is this true.

If so I think it is a good idea and will stop people from using it willy nilly.

Hey,
I agree with Spirit. I think it will have advantages and disadvantages but i think that overall it will be a good thing.
I reckon people will be less careful cos thay can get it far easier but I reckon that we'll end up with less pregnancies.
I think it should be available to under 16's, say over 14's perhaps?
(But quick question- apart from passports what ID are these people guna have- national insurance cards can be issued b4 16 therefore aren't considered ID. It could prove tricky for some teenagers to get hold of their passports without parents knowiung and being suspicious and askin questions- eg my passport is kept in the safe- i have no idea of the code and my parents would deffinately wanna know why I wanted it)

Love to all.

Grow old but never grow up.

16 age limit? That's stupid. Should be available to anyone. Education will mean ppl will still practice safe sex, but will know they have a safety net (albeit with a few holes in it, but...).

But anyone should be able to get their hands on it over the counter - 14 and 15 y.os are having sex, and they of all people cannot be getting pregnant at that sort of age! (Not saying that older teenagers should be but you know what i mean.)

Viti kuin muuri.

I'm not so sure about this.

The people most likely to use this are the ones that aren't educated that well and think it is ok for them to rely on the MAP.. I have friends who didn't used concetraption for years when they were younger, and for them a conctraception (which we recongnise it is not) that they didnt need till the next day, would have been seen as a blessing.
I suppose that takes you back to it being a good thing for protecting these people from getting pregnant, but it isn't going to stop them getting STD's.

A friend of mine recently had to go for the MAP when her and her bf had drunkenly been careless one night. The lady in the clinic talked to us all for ages about the after effects and the choices of pill she could take. You wouldn't really get this in a pharmacy and reading the back of the packet isn't a replacement. Lastly.. going there and being told by the nurse how much she didn't want to see us back again (!) and how serious she made the event, made my friend realise she should try her utmost to not be requiring it again..

You guys all seem pretty smart, but the majority isn't

Another thing that concerns me is, are there any contra-indications with any prescription drugs? Would the phamacist ask about what other drugs the person is on & dicuss the side effects which might be associated with taking different pharmaceuticals together.

They should do this anyway with behind the counter drugs - I've not been to a chemist who doesn't ask about asthma whenever I buy HUGE quantites of ibrupofen.

Is the price an incentive to sell it even if it is contra indicated?
And, who knows how often the MAP can be taken? What would happen if irresponsible people start using it (irresponsible rich people lol) as their main form of contraception?
given the side effects is this likely? wouldn't it be better to just go on the pill?

and isn't it better to sell over the counter than to hav people DIYing morning after pills? (2+2)

The main problem with taking drugs off the prescription list is the possibilty of abuse, whether this is intentional or not.

Don't forget - MAP isn't 100% effective.

IT'S £20.......WAY TO PRICEY AND IT ISN'T AVAILABLE IN MOST CHEMISTS TILL FEB I THINK. I'D STILL GO TOT HE DOCTORS I RECKON ALTHOUGH WHEN I WENT WITH MY FRIEND SHE GOT LECTURED, WHICH IS OFF PUTTING. PLUS MY OTHER B MATE IS ALLEGIC TO IT.

You shouldn't get lectured when you go get it - if you're getting it, it means you've obviously got some brains! And young ppl should be allowed to have fun with the opposite sex at whatever age they feel like.

I didn't lose my mind, it was mine to give away.

Im sorry but i dont think it is too pricey, I know that not all people can afford it, but at the end of the day, if you dont wanna get pregnant you should be practising safe sex in the first place, if your unfortunate enough to have a condom split on you or something like that, i know thats sad and i feel sorry for those people.

This is true, but i dont think that they are meaning to lecture you it is just their way of trying to tell you that you should be practising safe sex and shouldnt need the morning after pill.
if you're getting it, it means you've obviously got some brains!

Some people will just be using it instead of other forms of contraception though.

So do you think it is ok for a ten year old to be doing it then?

The reason it is only available for over 16's is probably because the legal age for sex is 16 over here.

Thats all true but i still think £20 is pricey...... i'd go to the doctors. Even when i go there now, the granny's mutter pregnant behind your back or they are really nice. So when i go to get the pill, my mate and i go and we joke around.... surprizingly so many people talk to us.... coz we are the only ones talking. The stuff we shout is a bit out..... 'oh you know why we're here, only a few onths though' but my view it serves the oldies right.

In the paper it said that many women went to get the morning after pill this morning but couldnt because the chemists didnt have it. This we assume is because many people had unprotected sex on new years eve. The question is why? Pregnancy is one thing, but what about all the STDs going around, these people must be crazy. Protection is essential.

Virgin,

£20 is not expensive, what is the difference between £20 and 16+ years of having to look after a child and having to bring them up.

A lot i think!!!

If you can go to the chemist to buy a morning after pill or go to the doctors for one im sure you can go to a family planning clinic for some condoms or even buy them.

yeah good point spirit, about the condoms and stuff... NO ONE should rely on the morning after pill, like my stupid friend does, coz she believes all the crap her boyfriend throws at her, like "im drunk so the alcohol will make the sperm weaker so there wont be as many and you wont get pregnant".. and the usual spontaneity reasons, or "its the wrong time of the month, you wont get pregnant now". anyone who believes them needs their head seeing to!! so all you thick people out there, USE A CONDOM FOR F***S SAKE!!! and if youre in a long term relationship go on the pill too if you can. it can just mess up your life so much, is that short time of passion worth it??

It's better to regret things you've done than things you haven't.

A lot of elderly people weren't brought up the way that we were and come form a totally different generatoin of people than us, at the end of the day if you ARE at the doctors about pregnancy then really they are not saying anything wrong are they.

Well personally i find your attitude towards this very immature, you should think about why you are there in the first place, i dont think that its a joking matter really!

j9, its actually called emergency contraceptive pill now! thats what the docs said to my mate when she went anyway and its referred to as that in official type places too! just everyone still calls it morning after pill.. even though you can take it 72 hours later!

Hello,

I must say.
I took the morning after pill shortly before new year. It did NOT cost me £20. I used my common sense and went to the sexual health clinic at my local hospital (there's one in every hospital! if not, go to casualty!).

You have been severly misguided!
I believe that the pill should be available to any age, everyone can get pregnant.. to protect against this happening shows incentive and brains! don't worry about being found out either! it's a small box, and a small pill!! just remember to take one ASAP and then the second one 12 hours later.

It works. For me at least. We did use a condom, but it came off inside me and we didn't realise till my boyfriend said 'ouch!' upon re-entering me! fishing about ensued and alot of panic since the GP's was closed the next day! managed to find some in the end though

Get clued up before having sex anyway! prepare for every eventuality! including failure of methods!

Luv,

Helen

helen, a hospital we went to in london wouldnt let my friend have the morning after pill. we were on a school trip to new york and stopping off in london, and she had taken it the day before, but was really sick and so that meant she had to get another one or it wouldnt work, we were told. so after much waiting around they came to the conclusion they couldnt give it to her and that she had to go to a brook advisory centre. i suggested that in the first place, would our teacher listen to me, noooooo!!

If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.
