I don't know about the rest of that stuff, but yes, a table really is a table.

Sorry, bad experience with my R.E. teacher who's a philosophy teacher too.

    I don't know...i don't understand it.
All i know is that I have to write an essay, tomorrow morning, about how everything is just lumps of matter and it doesn't actually have colour, taste, smell etc etc until we percieve it! :eek2:
    It's all nonsense to me!

    nope...its a compulsary module, unfortunately.
I'm doing Psychology but I don't understand that either so I'm changing to Forensics after the summer.

    Good luck. :)

I guess with Philosophy that you can just ramble on, I'd like to help but I'm sceptical about these things. I mean, to me..a table's just a table.

I vaguely remember that being DeCartes, I think therefore I am guy!
(I only remember that cos of talky toaster in Red Dwarf "I toast therefore I am" hehe classic!)

I haven't got a clue about it but rambling on is my speciality so *crosses fingers*

edited to add - I agree! a table is just a table!

some ancient indian philosophy/religious stuff from a couple of thousand years back stated ...everything is vibrating therefore everything is an illusion ...which thousands of years later science discovered was true.
nothing is still and nothing is solid. the solid table is made up of little balls orbiting at the speed of light.
there is actualy more space in the table than there is matter ...so the table we percieve is convenient but totaly false.

I tried to read Sophie's world about 4 years ago...it's still sitting in my bookcase with the bookmark half way through it.....

    But anyway....
If that's Locke....why does Berkley object? :chin:

All a table is, is a supported surface.

    Nuff said.

Place these simple words upon your exam paper: "Only smarties have the answer"
A classic response that a friend of mine gave in his RE exam. He washes cars for a living now, no pressure though.
