What is wrong with it? Aren't liberals elitist too?

Elitism... as in race, political standing, physical ability, or religion?

    Heh, wicked argument!!!

Sorry, but in debate you start a premise and that dictates how the debate will go.

You've simply stated why is elitism wrong without going in depth.

I think Toadborg's laugh signifies "spot on" and "well done" regarding your comment MoonRat.

Thought it was pretty self-explanitary(sp?), but apparently not.

Basically you've got a group of people, and rather than they all live in the same dirt, you let the ones who stand out enjoy the goods.
Why is it wrong to differentiate between people in that way? Haven't we all worked in some kind of way, to get somewhere to achieve a goal?

I wouldn't really think of elitism in that sense myself.

Would you describe would just be merit

Elitism is something more, and often the opposite of merit.

For example if a University were more likely to except students on the basis of their class, despite of their ability, I would call this elitism

its more about class and the favouring of the well to do........

Well that is just my interpretation, not solid gospel truth.....

I think your original question is still a very interesting and important one.

The problem with a meritocracy is that really it rewards those with ability over those who work the hardest or have some other virtue deserving of reward.

There are pletny of people that may be nto that bright who work very hard and get only a fraction of the reward of other people who may well work hard but get the extra because they were lucky enough to be born with ability.

Thus I distrust those who seem to wish to portray those who are rich as very virtuous people, really a lot of thier wealth has come through luck and this should be aknowledged..........

    No t-shirt.
Though once I was offered a mousepad for writing them a poem as a joke in a thread. Kindly declined, as I already have 350 mousepads or so.

    Elitism is wonderful!
    Don’t you think so?
It is fine if there is some Natural Elite in a country ( I use an expression of T. Jefferson) isn’t it?
I bloody hope I will be a part of it… in some indefinite future.
Indeed, I have lots of features Elite should have like brains, intellectual independence, self-education, this sharp ’my castle’ feeling, high aesthetical tastes, disgust to beer and any kind of collectivism, gun skills, the love to good wine and good motorbikes, and…hmmm….wealth, well, I am going to have got it.
