How you speak

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Do you pick up little phrases and mannerisms and things from your mates? Loads of my friends are scottish so I say "wee" instead of little, and stuff. And "it's all good" is something our group say, although no one knows where that came from. And "coolie".

They all seem very specific to my group rather than my area - do others have words and phrases that you've picked up from your friends?

Edited to add "fabulous" and "go team".

I seem to use the word"we" instead of "I" in conversation.

Like, I say "We like that" when somebody says something I agree with. No idea why.

I probably say "cool" too much too :(

    That sort of thing.

because in my group we have 3 people called Lu, (me, *ahem*, and Lauren), we talk about Lu, just to confuse people. i often say me likes or you like? rather than i like it and do you like it. we often speak to each other in spanish, elvish, and gaelic, itailan, and german, (mainly spanish, english and german though, as i'm the only fluent speaker of the other 2) and we talk about "the dude" to confuse everyone because everyone is a dude. and fairies, thats *ahem's* fault, because his pesonal insult is you fairy.

so, no one ever know who or what we are talking about!

It's elfish! Go read the stuff JRRT wrote about LotR! In English it would be elvish, but he changed it.

me and my housemate have a tendency to add '-alicious' or '-tastic' to the ends of words.

e.g. 'someone has neglected to clean the cat's litter tray out for quite some time, and now it is gipalicious/mingtastic.'

i also pick things up quite easily from people. i started saying 'wee' after my time in aberdeen, i still say 'i'm grand' some 7 years after my irish boyfriend, and i have been picking up coventry-ish from mr. kaff, such as the use of the word 'never' instead of 'didn't', which i don't quite understand, but still say :/

Everyone says that around here. I despise it. WHY? And when people say "I won you". No you didn't, you beat me.

I say one a lot. And put lots of French into everyday English.

E.g. J'ai besoin un piss, j'ai une headache etc.

for some reason i keep using australian sayings :s like i always say 'no worries' if someone asks if i can do something (or summat) and also 'no worries mate' :/

i havent caught myself saying 'ripper' or 'bonza' or 'g'day', but i did catch myself saying 'strewth!' the other day :/

as well as that, theres also 'Dude' which i completely over-use, and 'Cha!' as a shortening of the Wayne's World quote 'Cha! and monkeys might fly outta my butt!'

apart from 'Dont worry about it' i dont think theres any others :)
