How about this as a talking point...
Does the internet extend America's power and influence, or erode it?
I'd love to know your thoughts on this.

Mootastic.
What essay is it for?;)
Television and the papers work more strongly in favour of governments.
we all know that the internet is an excellent source of information, and an excellent way of communicating with people thousands of miles away in just a few seconds. I guess both information for both support and against america; without much censorship
However, to me, it seems america is probably the most powerful country on the net, simply because of the amount of sites from america.
Actually it's a simple question, but has a tricky answer.
I think in the short term it increase's it's power and influence, (as most internet traffic is routed through the US, and most of the big money makers on the net are US firms pulling money from all the other countries, and it makes their infrastructure more valuable) but as other countries gain the tech, and have better economies the power will move else-where.
That will be when the US starts trying to add a lot of pretty major rules to internet traffic ("from now on ever town will have a local 'echelon' server to use as a gateway...").
When banking and e-currency on the net take off then the gov.'s will be really pissed off, as the only thing garuanteeing their income tax is peoples honesty, then I think EVERY-ONE will agree that the US has lost it's power...
*phew* that turned into quite a rant
