Eating too much

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I have a friend, and sometimes she will eat to much, like to the point that you feel full. Then she pukes. But she doesn't puke all the time, just if she's eaten too much. It makes her feel better. Is this bad?

sometimes if youve had a bit too much to eat people feel better if they throw up

but ive had bulimia and its a nasty habit, you start not doing it often, then more and more till you do it all the time, i couldnt function without doing it i felt so guilty if i didnt

maybe she should see a doc?

Have a read of our factsheets about eating disorders here so you can understand them a bit better.

The Eating Disorders Association will also be able to give you some good advice - visit their website or call their helpline:

as long as she keeps it under control and doesnt start doing it all the time. Shes obviously got an eating disorder but not full blown bulimia. I can relate to what she does.

Try to get her to do more active things-
Whether it be going for walks or what have you, she will eat less and have more energy instead of just eating (not implying shes obese)
To answer the original Q I would say yes its a bit worrying at first glance!

I do that. But I don't think it's bad. It just makes me feel better. It's not as bad as self-harm, right?

Can't it still be classified as some sort of self-harming act? I thought that it kind of was, but maybe I'm wrong all together. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Hiya
Just wanted to come in and say that any self-abusive act is harmful to the person doing it. There isn't a 'scale' of what is better or worse - it is always relative to the problems that person is going through. If you are self-harming, binge eating or inflicting any other form of abuse on yourself it really is wise to seek help - either from a GP, a specialist organisation, a counsellor or friend, rather than making excuses that what you are doing isn't as bad as the next person.
    Take care y'all

problem is, then they might take it too seriously and try and cure me or something.

Hell yeah - my friend tried to convince me I'm bulimic, it scared me so I just don't talk about it now. [buries head firmly in sand]

It does sound a lil like bulimia

    But

I have this thing where I often feel sick after eating, especially while I'm out - so if I'm at a friend's house or at a meal I don't often eat much because I'm scared of feeling sick, I did have a phase where every Friday I would spend half an hour in my friend's bathroom feeling sick

If someones on a diet, people dont immediatley call them anorexic even though they are restricting food, so why should someone be called bulimic just for occasionally doing something that a bulimic does. As lng as its not out of hand and your whole life doesnt revolve around it then I think its nobody elses business but the person involved.

Well - yes, but the main point of my post was the second bit
