It's a word play trick. Alot of people don't read the first line correctly.
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.
So you start with 0 take 1000 and add 40.
so the real equation reads
0 - 1000 + 40 + 1000 + 30 +1000 + 20 + 1000 + 10 = 4100
Simple

No it doesn't. It equals 4100.
As Candy said, the brain is confused into thinking that the 40, 30, 20 and 10 really =1000, when it's only 100.

I keep getting 5000.

As NM said, it's a stupid play on words.
When you get to 4090, the extra 10 makes it 4100, not 5000.
And as candy said, that only adds up to 2100.
But never mind. I see now. I couldn't follow the English or the maths of it all.
