I desperatly fancy this girl.... but of course my best friend fancies her too..... and he isn't going to ask her out because he thinks he doesn't have a chance, but I think I do (ah... ego's are lovely), but I don't want to ask her out or admit I like her too because I don't want to risk losing a best friend, but then I also dont want to risk losing this girl.

But then... best friends are forever?

    Easiest thing would be to ignore your feelings and let this girl get away, thus keeping your friend and not having a problem.

    Life doesn't work that way thankfully, be very boring if it did.

    Go for it. No regrets, come clean to your friend first. Perhaps she'll knock you back and you and your mate can both move on, friendship intact!
