Basically I have fear I have bad breath. I think I have tonsils stones. Been to my gp saw three people there who have looked at my tonsils and said nothing wrong with them. But they clearly have no idea what tonsil stones are. You cant always see tonsil stones just by looking at your tonsils because you can’t see your whole tonsils and there are hole in tonsils where I think I get tonsil stones.

So basically I want a tonsillectomy which is the removal of your tonsils. I’ve been googling how much it is and it is 3K. I obviously can’t afford that. I get about £300 a month. But this month I actually got £500. (Most I’ve ever got). I give my dad £75 a month. I used to live off just £250. But because I’ve been doing more overtime I’ve got £500 this month. But I would get about 400 over all because I am now on universal credit and wasn’t on it when I was earning £250. But when I do overtime I just get hardly any universal credit.

So to get a tonsillectomy it is £3k up front. I have been googling about where I can get it done privately and it says pay it gradually for 10 months. Which surely means £300 a month right? If this is right then surely this is something that is actually achievable for me???  Because If I keep getting £500 a month I could save £300 and live off £200 a month as I used to live off not far off that. But it would actually be £125 a month cause of giving my dad money. So i don’t know my family would get very suspicious.

So there are a few barries one being I don’t think there is much overtime available atm at work anymore.

And two I can’t speak about this to my family so they will wonder where my money is going and I’ll just be trying to save for my tonsils. And then if I actually get them removed on the day how would I go about that. Do I pretend it’s an emergency NHS appointment for it and lie or what. How would I even go about that. If they ever found out they would wonder why the fuck would I spend 3k on tonsil removal and I can never tell them the reason why (please don’t say speak to your family about it - just never going to happen so please don’t comment that)

please can I have someone’s honest view on all this.

I am aware you may read this and be like what if the doctors are right then you’re going to be so disappointed if the issue doesn’t change or even gets worse. But trust me I’m 100% sure this will make it go away. So please comment with the mind set that this is the only help I need and I 100% have tonsils stones.

Thank you

Omg it also says a 36 month plan which is £79 a month I so could do that. I’m going to ring them up on Monday. I think that’s with interest though

this one actually says 2.5k which lot cheaper than wheee I’ve been reading most of other sites.

I hate to sound deeperate but I really really want anyone’s and as many peoples advice on this I can. Really affecting me and this has gave me some hope.

I guess with the living off that amount of money it depends what expenses you have whether it’s realistic.

Have you thought about maybe saving up for a few months before having it done, so that you’ve got some money set aside to put towards it? That might mean you have less to pay each month and would give you a little bit more to live on.

With your family, it’s up to you of course and totally your decision how you choose to spend your money as an adult.

I think it's smart you're thinking realistically on what you can live on that's important :)

I think there's some things to think about number 1 being have you looked whether they have any requirements for surgery? As tonsillectomys aren't so common i'm not sure if they would do it without reason like NHS.

Another thing is there's usually an over night stay but sometimes you go home same day. Are you able to get there, and get home same day or spend the night?

The healing process not gonna lie is hard and it's like having a really sore throat but 10x. You have to be prepared to have few weeks off work, and stick to a liquid diet(soup/ice cream)  and what your family will think etc

I don't know if there's a possibility to still get stones without tonsils (I think if they leave a bit of tonsil) but there is still chance for tonsilitis so be aware of that :)

It's 100% your decision I just want to make sure you have everything figured out. Write out a plan etc and see what they say Monday maybe x

Thank you @independent_ and @Past User  and @Aidan

good point on maybe waiting a few months to see if I can save anything. & good point on if they will do it if they think nothing is wrong either. But I’m sure that one won’t happen as they’re probably more specialised in tonsils so will know i have tonsil stones and know that you can’t always see them as your tonsils are bigger than what it looks. AS gross as it is but if I press on my tonsils white lumps comes out of them and I’m very hygienic. But the white lumps are not always visible. So my gp just don’t understand and must think I’m lying. But I don’t imagine that.  A private place Is better at understanding that surely. But I did just use their enquiry form and ask if need diagnosis to have tonilmosy. I also need to try to sound very sane otherwise they will do what my gp does and right it off as it’s in my head. But it’s really not.

I’ve tried all the things that are suppose to help tonsil stones. But nothing has worked. And google says that sometimes it’s just the shape of your tonsil and in that case the only thing can do is to remove them. And tbh I don’t know what a doctor can tel me that google can’t. To me google is more reliable atm

I suppose it’s one of those things where if don’t try will never know and I can’t live like this. No one understands how horrible it’s making me feel.

But I know if don’t work with my fear around bad breath I won’t hesitate in killing myself

It is definitely worth speaking to the clinic about it. Before you worry about the financial side of things, it’s worth finding out whether the clinic will do the surgery and what their view on your specific situation is :)

Fot sure nobody will understand truly I can empathize with how you feel though ❤️

They can occur despite good hygiene if you have constantly inflamed ones(I always get tonsilitis so mine are awful lol)
Or if you were just born with bigger ones.
Bigger ones generally cause sleep problems though.

I think it's not handy of your Dr to write it off as they could at least check for underlying causes. Hopefully you can get some info from the private place just watch out for hidden fees and such :)

You'vr probably tried salt water. Have you used a water pick? Those are pretty useful for them
