Marriage

Could you marry someone with extremist political views? For instance you vote Labour, and they vote BNP, or you vote Conservative and they vote for the British Socialists? I only ask because there is a guy I know at school, and his parents are falling out because his dad has said he is tired of Labour government failing to, basically, stop letting foreigners in ( yep, not asylum seekers, foreigners) and so he is voting BNP consistently, and his wife doesn't like it.

I think that who you vote for is just an excuse if it splits a couple who're already together.
Now, if you meet a person and hear that their view are totally different from yours, then you might take that into consideration before going further with them, but if there's attraction I really doubt that it'll matter. Unless it's two people from each extreme side of the scale. They tend to be fanatic.'

Either way, Denmarks old prime minister was married to the head of another party! Okay, so the parties were very closed in ideologies, and the party she was head of was in his coalition, but still...!

Someone I work with told me she voted consrvative a few years ago because her husband told her to and then when Labour got in she voted Labour because her husband again told her to!!!!

How bad is that - Is it surely better to just not use your vote if you don't have aclue what you are doing!!

I think people with opposing views can have good relationships but its when a persons view goes from one extreme to the other during the course of the relationship that it might get tricky

Funnily enough I was thinking about this yesterday as I was bored at work and decided to check the girls advertising in Yahoo Personals (no, really).

As well as your vital statistics you can input those of your ideal partner. No surprisingly most people wanted partners of similar political and religious affiliations. Especially political; a few people were a bit more flexible when it came to religious beliefs.

I could theoretically fall for a right-wing woman, although it is not very likely it would last. However I would never fall for a far-right person as that kind of ideology disgusts me.

Another thing I couldn't do is be with a god-botherer. The ultimate nightmare!

'shes a tory! man thats such a turn off!'

That was said by me the other week. I stopped fancying the girl age ago, but thats the final nail in the coffin really

Seriously though! i dont think political viewpoints should really be able to break people up, but i could see why a person would be against there spouse voting for an extreme party.:p

I could go out with anyone unless they were a nazi or an anarchist.
I don't talk about politics with my g/f much, probably because she couldn't give a damn, actually I have no idea of her political stance.
I don't think someone would have to be like me central-right as I would describe myself, as long as they weren't obsessed about their beliefs.

Hmmm interesting. I wouldn't refuse to go out with someone who was perfect in every other way except she voted Conservative at election time. The thing is people's voting patterns aren't purely a random thing, they are an expression of personality and reflect the kind of person they are - the type of job they have, where they live, their income, their upbringing, their beliefs and how they see the world in general.

Peoples political views tend to be shaped by their lives and their view of the world so although it might seem a small thing it probably reflects a greater difference between their personalities which could make a relationship difficult.

A lot of couples have opposing political views but they connect so well because they don't ever mention them, like my mother and her fiancee.

    I couldn't.

It's bad enough being married to someone who is apathetic about politics. Someone who opposed my views would just mean more things to row about... and who needs that hassle?

I wouldn't, I couldn't be with someone with opposing views to me. Just because I probably wouldn't like them as much or get on with them as well as someone who as similar views to me. No right-wing men for me. Definitely not marriage either because we'd probably want different things out of life.

I suppose it depends how much your political views and beliefs are integrated into your life; if you like to discuss politics and current affairs then it's going to matter much more if you don't discuss them. But I do, so it matters.

Apparently complementarity becomes more vital as the relationship progresses, but how a leftie and a member of the bnp could live together in harmony is beyond me.

But then my ex and I had the same views but he always took the opposing view to mine when we were "discussing" things just to rile me, which got annoying...although debating is always fun.

I would have no problem going out with a Tory and have done. The main reason I come onto this site is to discuss issues would people of opposing views, I would be bored to tears on a lefty site.

I don't think I could go as far as going out with a member of the BNP, my gut instinct tells me there could be problems at the wedding
