Pronounciation

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
It's weird...why do people prononuce things differntly? I know people have differnt accents and that, but like my mum says certain words differntly to how i would say them! Its the same word, and we both have the same 'accents' so really the word sholud sound the same.

*hmmm* Graph - grarph or graff? wednesday - wednesday or wednesdee?

Bleh...Im bored *Lalala* :p

It hacks me off when people put extra rs into words:

    For example

    bath becomes barth
    plaster becomes plarster

    :)

there are loads of different ways of saying stuff...it doesnt always depend on where you come from ie accents, it also makes a difference as to who you hear talking in certain ways cause you pick up on stuff real easy. its a bit like colloquialisms. if someone you like says a word that you like you pick up on it and say it and so with accents and ways of saying words, if you think something sounds nice then you say it like that.

wedensday and graff. And there's nothing wrong with my way of prounouncing.. For things like graph it's the right way - words shouldn't have extra Rs. Also things like "words" are prounounced WITH an r!! It's words, not wuhds.

    *sulks*

You should try living here and trying to understand the accent around here.

Nerz kern = the pointy bit of a rocket.
    Kerka-curler = a popular fizzy brown drink.
Perp = The leader of the catholic church.
Rerm = The capital of Italy.
Fern curl = A telecommunicatioins conversation.

Me, I come from Gloucestershire, which is close to Sommerset and Wiltshire, and I've been told I have a slight accent like a farmer! :(

hmm. I always though i just had a normal yorks/lancs cross accent, till last night when a lad i hadnt seen for about 6/7 years said my accent has gone really posh. I'm assuming thats posh for yorkshire, rather than posh posh though!

Hmm, graff (well, more commonly grath since i always mix up my "f"s and "th"s) and wensday, and skon, while we're at it!

Yarrrr, oi be allroight. Owzz a'baat yurself? :)
Luckily I don't have a very strong accent, and it's only the odd word that comes out in a Gloucestershire accent. An ex, from Yorkshire, always used to laugh at the way I'd pronounce some words. She didn't seem to realise how funny some of her pronounciations sounded.

The ex I've just mentioned above moved around a lot between Manchester, Halifax, and Peterborough, when she was growing up. Everybody in Peterborough thought she had a broad accent, wheras everybody in Halifax thought she had a posh southern accent. Her accent was definitely Yorkshire(ish) though.

People always seem to associate posh with the south.

Some of my friends in Bradford think that everyone from Southampton will speak like me...hmm...but they don't.
    Even my parents don't

    at Mr_Wobble's description.

I always pronounced Wednesday as wensday.
    Doesn't everyone?
