Unfortunately what first comes to mind for most when fairies are involved is extreme femininity.
It is unfortunate that fairies are automatically attributed to females, frills, and pink glitter. Especially considering their more gender neutral (and sometimes malicious) origins.

It's not just fairies. You also get more mermaids than mermen (this word isn't even in the spell checker), witches instead of wizards and so on.
Dwarves in folklore almost always have beards, though Im not sure that this is because they are male or because lady dwarves have beards too.
