Pornography - a place in society?

This is a political question, rather than one which should be left for the "sex" crowd to answer...
Recent laws passed in the UK mean that a new film rating is created - R18. Films in this classification can show erections, oral and penetrative sex, S&M etc although restrictions are still in place for bestiality, necrophilia and scenes depicting fecal matter (these being covered under the UK Obscenity Act).
What I want to know is if people believe that there is a place for this new rating, do you believe that pornography leads to increased sex crimes and what the experience is abroad...what are your laws?

In fact i'm happier that this be done than simply relaxing the obsentity laws, as it means people will know what they are watching and have a fair warning.
Providing the viewer is a responsible adult it should be fine, unfortunatly we seem to be getting worse at the art of changing children into responsible adults. I guess thats why this board is good.
The new system may lead to trouble if younger people start getting to see them though, and this resposibility falls (mainly) on the parents.
It certainly makes more sense to have this than to decide if a film can get seen by the morals of thr individual watching it. Under the proposed system it will just get a higher rating.
Who exactly is this rating supposed to protect?
No pornography does not lead to more sex crimes. Those who commit sex crimes are those who are already predisposed to commit sex crimes, watching some porno isnt going to spur any normal person into doing something.
Ive seen every possible genre of porn and ive not turned into a sex fiend as yet.
Currently you are not alowed to show erect penis's (penii ???) on film, or full penatritive sex, or (maybe) male orgasm. So this will alow new things to be seen.
But either way, is haveing a seperate certificate just for sex is no bad thing. it lets people know what they are in for.
Added to that i'm not sure that the current system is working. How many 15 year olds do you know that have never seen an 18 rated film?
Back in Spain me and every other 15 year-old who so wanted would just walk into a video shop and rent the porn film of their choice (and we're talking proper hardcore here) for viewing with their girlfriends/boyfriends or just with some mates. Illegal as it might be, no one makes a fuss about it, least of all the video shop attendant. My friends and I have all grown up into sexually healthy, balanced people and I don't think Spain has a higher rate of sexual crimes than elsewhere. If anything it's lower than in Britain. So as far as I'm concerned porn does not harm individuals or society as a whole. Another completely different issue is to whether is degrading to the 'actors' who are involved, and to women in particular.
Nah, even these films will only be available through licenced sex shops, so you aren't going to see them in Woolworths anytime soon
As for the adult channel, its still very much soft core, and cut to the max, you can see female genetalia, but nothing penetrating and no shots of aroused men.
Well then im all for it then, although id still rather see em on a normal 18 cert.
Im not quite sure how making another rating will help that. The laws are fine, they just arent enforced and they are (rightly)ignored by parents. Besides, the ratings arent even any good. They are made by these film censors who dont have a clue about the real world. I dont have a problem with a 15 year old seeing an 18 rated film.
That's because they have to take politics into consideration and no politican has the balls to say such a thing.
It really is laughable that I can watch two people have sex, in glorious detail, but I cannot buy a video of it from any high street store.
More laughable that a 16-y-o can have sex, but not watch it on film.
Then they should send it to me and I will ensure that it is distributed in the correct manner
It doesn't affect me anyway, I'm too much of a wuss to walk into a sex shop, Ann Summers with my gf is as far as I'll go lol.
Personally I think the age of consent should be raised to 18, but thats another debate entirely.
About time hardcore is allowed over here, it was a stupid nanny-state rule. Any old (or young) fool can look at hardcore porn on the net, but cant rent it out. The "Mull of Kintyre" rule was as stupid as the rule that meant all porn actresses in the 1960s had to be shaved, as pubic hair was indecent.
Id be more worried about violent movies than sex movies...films like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are far more damaging than seeing two peopel fucking. As usual in this country sex is seen as worse than brutally murdering someone.
Ultimately I have no major problem with pornography. I feel if the participants of porn are consenting adults (this naturally negates paedophilia) and they enter the industry of their own volition then there is no 'unethical' aspect within pornography.
