    What I got from that is there's nothing to do when you're on the "outside" other than pretend not to care and wait for the situation to resolve itself, hoping that the person doesn't die in the meanwhile. I really hope I misunderstood.

    I don't think that's what she intended. It's more that the lack of understanding can be very frustrating for both parties and that, while Allie and other folk with depression do appreciate the sentiment, often it is hard to keep hearing all the things that will OMG TOTES MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER!, especially from people who haven't a clue how depression feels. Sometimes it's better just to go, "Ok, there's obviously something wrong, have a hug and a 'how you doing?' every so often".

    That's better, but it's showing feelings, which according to that page is like performing acrobatics in front of a paraplegic who wishes they could walk. I wouldn't do that (supposing I could perform acrobatics).
