Customising mens clothing

I've googled this quite a few times, with all its variations but not found much inspiration.
I'm managing a band atm, and part of my job role includes looking at their artist image. They have very little money, and need some stage clothes. So, I'm currently trawling the local charity shops and looking in peacocks and primark for some plain things that can be modded and made great!
But, I'm really not sure what to do with them... they're 3 guys, in late 20's, and they play alt rock, leaning on the darker side of alt rock. So i was thinking black shirts with coloured overstitching, new buttons, studs, patches, torn up jeans - but dark wash if not black.
I'm just wondering if that all sounds a bit...cliched?
Any ideas would be really helpful!
