Pain injections in my knees, advice..?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Just wondered if anyone could give me any advice on what to expect from the injections I am going to have at the pain clinic, they're doing them for arthritic pain in the knees and also my spine, not sure what they're going to be, would assume a painkiller and maybe a steroid..
Was wondering, would they do them both at the same time and will I have to rest them etc etc...

They didn't really tell me too much about what was going to happen.

I really wish they would hurry up though, I am in bloody agony with it and am still waiting for them to change my prescription to the morphine too!:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Any help advice would be appreciated..

I am UK based if that helps at all.

    Hi,

Sorry to hear that you are suffering such pain, hope that you get the treatment and medication that you need soon.

It's difficult to answer your questions about the injections - is there any way you could ask the clinic these questions before you get the treatment? You could call them with your questions and say that you didn't really get all the information you needed. Often, we think of questions after the Doctors have gone and you've had time to think about things, so it's perfectly reasonable to ask for clarification.

You could also call NHS Dircet? 0845 46 47, they may be able to advise you? You could also check out this NHS page - some of the informaiton on there may help?

Take care and keep posting :)

As mentioned on here before, I'm due to receive injections soon - mine will be botox. A friend said the following to me on Facebook:
The injection I recieve are injections through the back of the pelvis into the central nervous system. They are called 'Nerve root block injections' the injection bassically bathes the complete central nervous system in steriods, pain killers and a numbing agent. The length of time that the injection works, is diffrent in each individual; the first injection lasts for about, on average 5 months, the body does gradually become slight immune after a while. After about the 5th injection they were only lasting 4 weeks. Hope that explains it a little. So basically numbing the nervous system so that the nerves dont send pain signals to my brain.

    Is that what you're getting?

It sounds like it.. Appreciate the response. Hope it works. I did have some injections in my spine at the pain clinic when I was under them before (about 10 years ago) but I am quite sure they were epidurals, I think I had four in four days and they didn't really do much. That's when they kinda gave up on me and put me on dihydrocodiene, that worked up till about 3 months ago, plus I was that immune to it I was taking about four time the dose I should have been just to get some relief. So now I am waiting for them to do these injections and change my painkillers from the paracetamol, diclofenac and tramadol (that aren't doing anything) to morphine...
    Sorry, started ranting, lol.

    Thanks again.

Will post more as things happen in case it helps anyone else in a similar position.

Thanks for that.. Every bit of info/encouragement helps..
I wish I would have asked these questions while I was in with the specialist, he's really good and approachable but I get a bit confused and have no memory. Good job my wife went with me otherwise I would have forgotten to tell him all my aches and pains, haha..
I asked him if it would be a long wait for them and he just said that it shouldn't be too long cos they're not allowed to make you wiat that long now, so I assume it will be less than the 18wk max.. God I hope it's a lot sooner than that. I am getting really frustrated with it all. It's nice to rant on here, don't like to stress my wife out with it all as she has her own health issues and stress isn't good for her. Then again, neither is me being laid up...

    Cheers again..
