A Level Beginners Courses

I'm hoping to do an A level Spanish course at college which involves do a GCSE and an AS level in the first year as I've never studied it before. But the lecturer has advised me to only do 3 AS levels as I have to do the GCSE too, but I still hope to do 4 AS levels. Has anyone done a similar course and how demanding is this type of course?
