Waterproofing a jacket

I bought a decent skiing coat in the winter, to use for snowsports and walking. It's a good coat - warm and breathable. However it's not quite as waterproof as I'd hoped, considering it was described as 'waterproof' when I bought it. It's fine for snow, but rain tends to soak in quite easily. If it's really pouring down then the coat can get quite heavy with water.

I guess there are different levels of waterproofness and breathability, but I'd have thought 'waterproof' should mean water will bead up and run off the coat, instead of soaking in. So I've been considering using a waterproofing treatment - has anyone used one? Was it a spray or wash-in thing? Do they work well? Can it damage the fabric?
