"The prime minister and his deputy have written to cabinet colleagues to remind them that reducing the deficit is the 'most urgent issue facing Britain'. But David Cameron and Nick Clegg also say any proposals to promote economic growth will be treated favourably in the departmental spending review. The joint letter comes as government ministers are negotiating with the Treasury over the scale of the cuts. The discussions come amid tensions over defence spending and welfare reform."

Bloody hell, I know this is silly season, but this is really taking the piss. Nick and Dave, you hold a meeting with the cabinet just about every fucking week. Couldn't you have read out this piffling drivel to them at your next meeting? Good grief...

Don't civil servants read the newspapers or listen to a word their ministers tell them? Surely the civil service already knows that big cuts in public spending are being demanded of them.

Actually I think something can read out of this. I for one am getting rather sick and tired of the daily premonitions of doom and warnings of cuts and 'tightening of belts' coming from the government.

One thing is preparing the population for cuts. Another is trying to get us to accept far more radical cuts than they are probably needed- which is precisely what's happening here.

Make no mistake: while more efficiency and austerity might be needed, the current crisis has been fucking god-sent to the Tories, who are taking the opportunity to make more cuts they could have possibly dreamt of just 3 years ago. I bet the fuckers can't believe their fucking luck.

Not good news. The NHS and welfare systems in particular are in severe jeopardy from this lot.
