Live in Scotland? Want to talk about alcohol...

Here's something you might want to get involved in if you live in Scotland...

"At the National Youth Summit on Alcohol held by Scottish Government last year, Public Health Minister Shona Robison announced that Young Scot had been asked to recruit and support a National Youth Commission to carry out a year-long investigation into Scotland’s relationship to alcohol and, in particular, its impact on young people.

Today we are formally launching our recruitment campaign to find those Youth Commissioners. Fifteen young volunteers aged 14-21 are needed to contribute to this internationally innovative approach to taking young people’s ideas and opinions seriously.

This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to influence the shape of future policy on this key topic in Scotland. We would like to ask you to ask any young person aged 14-21 you are in contact with to consider applying for this, if they would be willing to take part in five Youth Commission meetings and an exciting, but small and manageable, amount of additional investigation work, including expert witness hearings, study visits and consultations. There is a comprehensive programme of training and support with opportunities for accreditation. A specialist independent Advisory Group will also support the Youth Commission.

The closing date for applications to become a Commissioner is 6 April 2009. Applications and further information can be found at www.youngscot.org/yca.

An information session will take place in Edinburgh on 25 March at 6pm – see www.youngscot.net for details to be posted in the next few days. Young people who are interested, and those supporting young people who will apply and would like to find out more, are welcome to come along to that event.

So, PLEASE pass this email on to others you know who are in contact with young people who may be interested. We greatly appreciate your help. You will be able to follow the progress of the Commission via the Young Scot website throughout the year, and we also hope you will work with us to consider other ways that the young people you work with can connect with and engage with this piece of work over the coming months."
