Sick scum (Westboro Baptist Church) coming to Britain

Followers of the virulently anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church have threatened to picket a sixth form college in Basingstoke, Hampshire during a staging of The Laramie Project, a play about an American youth murdered because of his sexuality.

The church from Topeka, Kansas is mainly composed of relatives of the founder, pastor Fred Phelps, who style themselves "the most hated family in America".

Their core belief ? that God will punish the West for its acceptance of homosexuality ? has seen them protest at dozens of servicemen's funerals brandishing garish placards stating "God hates the USA" and "Thank God for dead soldiers".

Details of the church's first picket in Britain was posted on their website with the slogan "God Hates England; Your Queen Is A W----".

"Some of the best Bible preaching in the history of the world came out of that dark dismal land, but now it is full of all abominations," the notice read.

"God will shortly destroy the UK and the world, but not until they have got the plain, clear message so that they will be without excuse."

So, should these twisted repulsive cunts be allowed entry into the country? If we (or rather, the government) sees fit to stop those inciting hatred from entering the country, such as the Muslim-hating twat the other day, then this bunch of oxygen thieves should also be sent back.

And if they are allowed into the country, then it is certainly time for direct action. I for one would gladly join in.
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

We are a free country after all, let them come over. I might not agree with their bullshit but free speach and all that bollocks.

Although I think it would be for their own safety they stay stateside.

I agree. However, I am more interested in what that witch, Jaqui Smith, has to say about it. I presume that she believes free speech on religion is not allowed, whereas homophobic rantings are.

I'd really like to come out with some sort of well put arguement against these people. But while I was watching the Louis Theroux programme about them all I could think of was what a bunch of wankers.

If they're allowed in, I for one endorse any campaign against them.

Same as the Dutch bloke, let them come here as long as they haven't broke any laws or aren't intending to. Although I'll be interested in the government's reaction. If they do let them in, they'll be hypocrites, surely? All of the same arguments apply. Actually moreso, because Americans actually have to apply for a visa, whereas special action was required to deny entry to Wilders.

Just make sure they're greeted by a bombardment of gay porn with Fred Phelps' face on it. I'm sure Teagan can help us out there. ;)

But if the Home Office ban them, its just going to give them even more publicty. Then they have achieved what they wanted- publicty.

Jaqui Smith should let them in with the minimum of fuss, thus avoiding giving them any publicty, they will then get their heads kicked for their piss poor behaviour then stuck on a plane back to Backwardsville or wherever they are from.

    Sorted :thumb:

The government will only let them in if they can spin it in a way that makes them look principled.

Oh, to clarify, I'm not ASKING them to be banned. I was just stating that I wonder if Jaqui Smith will apply the same 'principles' that she applied to the Geert Wilders visit. Neither Wilders or the Phelp's should be banned.

It was wrong to ban the Dutch guy and it'd be wrong to ban or try and silence this lot.

It's fucking worrying how quickly people are ready to try and ban something they disagree with or find offensive. I couldn't care less how offensive people find something. Stop interfering with my right to be exposed to it.

dont think they should be banned, part of the 'beauty' of a free society is the undesirables are free to air their voices.

Of course, that doesn't stop other people being free to criticise and/or troll them. I don't think it will too difficult to organise an anti-westboro-baptist-church rally wherever they're going to meet.

I dislike them intensely, and I agree that there is now a precedent for keeping them out. But then we all know about this govt. (indeed, most govts.)'s double standards on homophobia. It is seen as somehow 'lesser' than other -isms and -phobias. Maybe, however, as they are so abhorrent to everyone, there are grounds to keep them out?

Also (only just actually read the article) who on earth pickets 17/18 year olds?!

Well everyone here probably knows my position. I believe that social history should be taken into effect when establishing what should or should not be allowed. Inciting racial hatred, for instance, is a crime in this country. That is partly if not wholy due to historical events, both at home and away, and the hardships and persecution people of minority backgrounds have suffered at the hands of bigots and haters. On that basis it is perfectly acceptable to deny entry to the country to any well known racist who regularly incites hatred and is likely to do so.

It is my view that in such cases "freedom of speech" should take second place, and that imposing such restrictions on a very limited number of cases does not affect the freedom of speech of the immense majority of the population, and frankly those who are affected can go fuck themselves.

Incitring homophobic hatred should be treated in the same way. Given that that family of scumbags are well known to incite homophobic hatred, they should not be let in the country.

If they are, the police should at least have the decency to stand aside so people can kick seven shades of shit out of the cunts.

The new powers to ban photographs might yet work in our favour. :p

OK, vigilante justice and curtailing fundamental freedoms in one post. What a treat.

Chomsky sums it upper better than I ever could: 'If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.'

To be fair we have far more laws governing public order offences than the Americans do. If they said/displayed half of what they're intending to they'd be arrested.

Section.5 Public Order act doesn't just cover abusive words, it's anything said or displayed that causes harassment/alarm/distress to another person.

There are defences e.t.c. but I can't see what these guys would use.

    Inciting homophobic hatred ?

If what you say is correct, the only hatred that is being incited is against themselves. Yet you are getting your knickers in a twist and advocating violence.Perhaps it is you that is inciting hatred ?

i'd fully be up for blocking their entry into the UK by any (legal) means nessesary...

i can't stand religious bigots, its makes it worse because they are using something that many regard as sacred in order to incite hatred.

They pose no threat of violence, and agree to conform to the laws of the land. Let them in. Let them protest. And hell I'll even go so far as to say, let the police try and stop people from lynching them.

For anyone who is interested there used to be (still are?) some great videos on Youtube of WBC people here in the US barely making it out with their lives at a few rallies.

ya got to admire the balls on those folks. Picketing a military funeral in the American South East with signs reading "You soldier was a faggot!" is a good way to get yourself shot.

Though perhaps we should have let them in, then have them arrested, prosecuted and thrown into a cell to the maximum extent of the law.
