Windows live mail gains POP Access!

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
At Last! They've started to roll out the final part of their update :)

It's all dandy and everything, but I've entered the settings into Mail in Mac OS X and its connected, downloaded all my mail. Apart from the stuff in folders.

But if I were to delete mail and click the 'Get Mail' button, it does not sync :(

Am I using the wrong program or something?

EDIT

Here's the settings if anyones interested.

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Didn't they used to do this anyway then got rid of it like a bunch of tossers?

Can't believe they've only gotten around to allowing POP access - been using it with GMAIL for years. They've obviously been holding out from allowing POP access to keep people going to the web and seeing their adverts.

They did used to have POP access and got rid of it. That was when I moved to gmail, and thank god I did, cos hotmail is SHITE.

Well I've had fun and games with it this afternoon. I didn't like Mail so I downloaded Thunderbird and it set up all dandy, it downloaded all my mail and when I went to the online one... It had deleted it all :(

So now I'm a little peaed off. I'm playing around in windows at the moment with outlook and the plugin. That 'syncs' your mail and uploads information i.e wether its been read or not.

I take it I need to use a different protocol to achive this?

That's what pop does, it downloads mail off the server to be hosted on your local machine

Imap doesn't delete! All my stuff is on imap I believe.

Well I'm googling around, but not with much luck. I've managed to configure if I delete mail local, it will delete server side.

But I check my email regularly on many different machines!

What's pissed me off the most, it's downloaded it ALL and not left a copy!

I've always prefered using IMAP to POP personlly as I don't like the GB's of mail clogging my pc up :-p

They've had POP access for ages, but they made you pay for it.

They only started charging for it a few years ago, before that it was free.

To make you download and use their software?
I know Windows used to offer POP free, but I've always used Yahoo from a young age. I still have one from 8 odd years ago. Though the spam filter sucks so I've left it but I still check it once in awhile to make sure subscription emails and such are collected, then changed. I went to Hotmail afterwards when POP was free but they took it away, so I went away too.

Then good old Gmail came along and saved my emails. At first I didn't like it, but the spam filter is awesome. I couldn't care much for POP or anything now, but I use POP and IMAP on my Google Apps emails.

You can't slate the Hotmail spam filter :)

But yeah, I've got a google mail account too, but I rarely use it anymore. I like my @live address, before that I had @msn! Shows you how things have changed

    @msn > @hotmail > @live

I can. Gmail catches every single spam message for me, whereas hotmail caught about 75% at best.

95% here :) I get the rare bit of spam, but even when I do, just mark and report and I'll never see it again! :)

Didn't Hotmail have POP3 access in previous years, but it was a paid-only service?

Hotmail Plus, yeah. With the whole moving to 'Windows Live' they want to try grab more of the market, so opening up pop3 access to anyone for nothing might attract some people!

Me on the other hand, I'll bum Microsoft to the cows come home :)

IMAP is great, it's a pity not every server uses it.

I don't see why it's so hard for Windows live to implement the feature?

Get with the times bro :p

    Other reasons gmail is better:
It has text ads, instead of garish, distracting, bandwidth-consuming banners.
The scripts actually work, whereas hotmail is horribly over-complicated and half of the time doesn't even load properly.
As stated, IMAP access - saves tons of time, especially when accessing on a phone.

Well If it makes you feel any better, I do have gmail, but I prefer my live account. Everything is all connected together.

You can remove those ads. Inside the prefences.

    Settings>WebClips>Untick the box>Save.
