What's this sort of back-up called..

I want to back up the files on my pc but don't want to have to restore them all to my new installation only to pick and choose but still to have a complete backup.

    That's just a normal backup.

    The opposite kind of backup where you just have the full thing is generally known as a snapshot backup, but even then in some cases you can retrieve individual files, it depends on the tech.
