Dieting and going out for an Indian

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Don't laugh at me now!! But I'm planning on going to an Indian restaurant on Friday and as I'm trying to lose a bit of weight, or at least maintain this week, I want to try and curb my eating.

I'm thinking Korma's are a big no-no, and I won't have a naan either - I'm just not sure what other options are viable? Oven cooked chicken tikka with as little oil as poss - with boiled rice.

And perhaps a shared sag aloo and a couple of small glasses of Rose.

Do-able?

Try and stick to dishes with tomato based and vegetable dishes and have a few spoonfuls of boiled rice with it.

    Indian
Think again before you order 'extras' - poppadoms, samosas and bhajis are loaded with saturated fat. Try dishes baked in the Tandoor oven, like chicken tikka, tandoori or shashlik that come without a sauce. Avoid creamy sauces like chicken tikka masala, which contains a huge 47g of fat, according to Health Which?, and rich passandas and kormas. "It's not the meat, it's the sauces that are the problem," says Jill Franks. "Go for something tomato-based or with vegetables, like a rogan josh, and eat it with brown rice."

Indian breads are another fat trap. "Naan bread is full of refined sugar, and fruity peshwari naan is even worse with added coconut. If you have to have a naan have just a small piece or order it instead of rice," says Jill Franks.

Danger words: korma, chicken tikka masala, poppadoms

Tandoori anything would probably be best with salad, I would even avoid rice if you can. If you can't either share some boiled rice with someone else or only have half a portion.

Can you get hold of the menu before hand to plan what you will have? It might help stop you getting overcome with food lust on the night and just eating everything :D

If you ask nicely they might knock up some low fat foods for you :)

No point in denying yourself little treats every now and again. Whats the point of going to a restaurant if you're not going to enjoy it and be fretting about everything you put in your mouth. I say go, order whatever the hell you want and savour the taste.
The weight will come off with hard work and determination over time, one meal isnt going to change that.

I don't think that's a great idea to not eat all day - if you skip meals all day you'll be mega hungry at the restaurant and more likely to binge on lardy bad food :D

You could just eat extra extra healthy throughout the day and up your excercise for that day and the next.

Let us know what you have in the end :)

tandoori stuff with salad, yummy but without the creamy sauce and you can just skip the rice and bread too. Indian is yum. I would just eat what I wanted and take it as a treat day, but good on you for going the healthy option.

Word Tim. Not as daft as you look :p

No point in denying yourself treats, just eat whatever you like and make sure you enjoy it.

Just dont go eating it every day and do some exercise and things will be fine. :thumb:

I think I'm going to have a non-sauce chicken dish, a table-spoon of my mates rice, a smidge of their naan (just cos it's my birthday! LOL) and the salad.

I'm very much looking forward to it :D

You could always eat half of the dish and take the other half home. Then it is twice as healthy (or something like that ;)) and you get it to eat it again! Thats what I always do.

I had a garlic tikka (dry) with 2 tablespoons of a friends pilau rice, a green salad and a sneaky snippet of her pashwari naan so I didn't go too wild.

Meant I got to drink too :D

    Thanks Sneer.

I went out for lunch and dinner (thurs and sat respectively) so this week I'm just hoping to maintain the loss...I don't think I'll lose this week. I just don't want to gain!!

Need to burn it off though!
