Is masturbation an addiction?

I think it is. Some people say it's just a hobby but usually they haven't tried it. I myself think I'm addicted. What is your opinion?

Its only an addiction if it overwhelmingly interferes with your day-to-day life and normal social interaction. It is not an addiction in itself. That should be pretty obvious.

Well not necessarily, I think you could be addicted to anything without it getting in the way. But addictions do tend to become problems. It's possible to be in the habit of masturbation, speaking as a guy with a fairly high sex drive at time it can be frustrating that you feel compelled to do something every 12 hours or so... but because masturbation is comforting it can be habit forming and eventually addictive. Not in a physiological sense like you could be addicted to cigarrettes but in a psychological sense masturbation could become a crutch where you masturbate because you are unhappy about something without ever addressing the deeper issues.

Like drinking a glass of whiskey a fortnight is not an addiction, you can - of course - be addicted to alcohol.

There are some boxes to tick off, if something is an addiction or not and masturbation can too.

for masturbation to be an addiction, one has to be addicted to it. a masturbating addict, isnt necessarily a masturbation addict, unless the person is addicted to masturbation. a masturbate cannot addict, while an addict can masturbate.

The OP wrote "Is masturbation an addiction?". Well, no, masturbation is NOT an addiction, whatever way you look at it. It's a perfectly normal body function. However, excessive masturbation including the reasons whch ShyBoy put forward so eloquently, can be addictive. I think the OP's heading was, in itself, misleading.

Well maybe you should go see a doctor to see if you are diagnosed with Chronic Masturbation. Chronic Masturbation, it has recently been coming into the light. My friend had it. He had to go to rehab to get better. But, that's a very rare case though. Chances are you don't have it.

Not necessarily - chronic is the term used for most conditions that are becoming damaging and excessive. In the case of masturbation it's the same thing people are talking about earlier - masturbating instead of going to work, masturbating to the point of constant physical injury, etc.

I guess if you needed rehab for it a doctor would use the term - but in the sense of the post by Rex, it isn't a virus or an sti or something - more like something that would sit alongside a sex addiction, or shopping addiction.

Wow! I never knew people got THAT bad - where it stops you from going to school, work etc! How do people stay hard 24/7? And produce enough semen (presuming it's a male)?
