hair dye over salon highlights

I have dark brown hair naturally(although not dark enough to be a brunette exactly) and in the past have had bleach highlights until i saw the light and had colour highlights and low lights. Now I am fed up of the colour as the blondeish colour is looking very brassy, i love the medium brown tones in my hair so was wondering if it would be safe to use a home dye kit on my hair? I know its ok to go darker generally but essentially i still will be lightening some bits that arent dyed. I know the sensible thing will be to goto a salon, which i will if i have to, but would prefer not to spend that much if i can get advice about it for free
