Norton 360.

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
My subscription is about to run out, literally, but after checking the renewal prices and the lack of funds in my back account - it's not something I can really do...

Will my flaptop get really poorly without the Norton 360 protection?

Thanks in advance :)

    Anything 'Norton' is rubbish bloatware.

There's plenty of free alternatives out there.

Your laptop will probably be more poorly WITH norton 360!

Remove the crap and replace it with AVG Free 8.0 :)

I've been using http://www.free-av.com/ for years, never had any problems with it, and it's been far more reliable, user friendly and uses less system resources than any of the big name brands like Norton or Mcafee. Plus it's free.

    Kaspersky I've tried, bad.
You're still protected by your norton but you're not fighting agaisnt new viruses since you can't update.
All you need is malwarebytes and spyware terminator. Works perfectly, no need for extra AV's.

Also norton isn't that bad if you have the pc to support it, it's a good AV.

The enterprise versions of Norton and McAfee are lightweight (namely Symantec and V Shield), but the home versions are bloat.

As with what most people have already said - AVG Free. Or NOD32.

Currently I have no AV installed at all. Which means I get a big red X in the task bar.

I'd be more worried about getting big red Xs everywhere on the screen (I had a virus in win95/98 that did that). :p

On balance, it's fairly unlikely. I've had a windows PC now for quite a few years, and only 1 virus has ever infected it - which was a direct result of me downloading a file from a unverified source. (A gamble at the time which didn't really pay off.)

So given 1 virus over a few years, I reckon it's pretty slim chances of getting another one. Especially as I don't engage in a lot of the activities that normally result in getting viruses.

Still, when I get around to it, it'll probably be AVG free 8

How do you know you've not got a virus if you have no scanner?

I have had a scanner for the past few years. There's not one on right now because it's been reinstalled recently.

So I know there wasn't one over the last few years. I don't know that there's not one on there right this second, but, as I said, averages suggest that there isn't.

There's an option in the security centre to 'change the way security centre alerts me' which gives you an option to disable that red x :)
