Email + Instant Messenger?

I have a relative that lives abroad, who doesn't have their own computer so must use the internet whenever they get the chance at a friend's place, internet cafe, etc
ATM They use Yahoo Mail - which I think is horrid to use online with all those adverts
What I want is something like GMAIL that has both email and Instant Messaging but offers more then Google Talk
Ideally it should allow her to pull the emails off her Yahoo Account and as she checks signs her into a web based MSN Messenger so we can see she is online and chat to her in real time.
I don't even mind if there is a PHP / AJAX script and hosting it myself.
Any ideas?
