BALLS!!!!

I went out today and bought an exercise ball. For those who don't know what that is, it's a big, slightly squashy, strong plastic ball. You are supposed to use it for exercises. The trouble is, what do I do with it! (other than bounce it!)

I did feel silly carrying it home!

    Yeah, I can imagine that you would feel a little funny carrying that back on the street...

    They're used to work your midsection mostly and they do a damn good job too. I literally used one about half an hour ago.

    Here's what I do with them:

    crunches
    place the ball on the floor and lie on it, with the small of your back on the top of the ball. The top of your butt should be touching the ball. Make sure your feet are flat on the ground and stretch out, arching your back until it's pretty much extended all the way. Then either keep your arms extended over your head or put your hands behind your head and do a partial situp, but not too far 'cause the ball will slip out and you'll land on your backside. Trust me, it hurts! <IMG SRC="frown.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

    back extensions:
    Lie on your stomach on top of the ball with your knees off the ground and just the tips of your feet touching the ground. Curl your upper body around the ball with your hands behind your head then slowly arch your back until it's fully extended. You should then be just balanced on your stomach and your feet. Again, be careful because the ball can slip out and it's sometimes hard to keep your balance. ( Is it just my dirty mind or is there something vaguely sexual about this? ) <IMG SRC="wink.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

    I don't what this one's called but it works your abs:
    Put your hands on the ground like you are about to do a push-up ( or press-up, whatever you call them) and place the ball underr your shins. So you should be balanced on your hands and your shins. Pull your knees up close to your body and then straighten your legs out. The way you do this is by rolling the ball towards your midsection and then towards your feet. Keep you back straight and do this by bending at the waist.

    There are a bunch more of these that you can do with this, these are just the one's I'd thought you'd like. If you want other ones, post here. I'm sure Alistair will have some suggestions too.

    Oh yeah, I used to know a site that had video of these exercises, which are bound to be ten times better at showing you how to do them then me. I'll look and see if I can find the link and post it here if I do.

    sod exercise with it, surely some proper fun can be had ? Firstly draw a huge face on it, perhaps an arse. Give it a name, and just run around diving at it at speed <IMG SRC="smile.gif" border="0" ALT="icon"> kick it at toddlers/cats, your parents !

    I have been mostly using the ball as a space hopper, except there are no handles so it is quite hard. Surely that counts as exercise?

    Can anyone tell I am on a major get fit and slim for summer drive- in the past week I got a dance mat for the PSX and this ball..It had better work.

    I hadn't thought about space hoppers in years until you just brought that up. God, they were fun when you were little, weren't they? But without the handles? That sounds dangerous. <IMG SRC="eek.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

    Yeah I know the new name kind of sounds girly, but it's the only nickname I have that isn't too foul to use on The Site...actually, come to think of it, is there anything too foul to be on The Site? Believe me, I've been trying to come up with something better.

    I'm trying to get in shape for the summer too. There's a concert in the desert in about a month that I want to look good for so I'm trying to shed the extra beer pounds.

    Hopefully you're doing better than I am...

    Lexicon just sounds like Lexi..a girls name!

    I just want to be able to wear crop tops and stuff in the summer. I put on weight after going on the (DAMNED) pill so am trying to shift it.

    The trouble with this ball is that, as I am quite small (5"2) I can't lie over it and reach the floor <IMG SRC="frown.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">
