Curious about Willy...

Do Scots sometimes identify themselves with the simpsons character "Willy" working as a janitor/groundkeeper at Springfield Elementary?

What's scottish about him and what's not?

It's a bit like asking the Irish if they identify with Leprachauns.

I know absolutely nothing about the Simpsons except that Groundskeeper Willy is an Aberdeen fan, so irrespective of the fact that he's yellow and not real - we're brothers :thumb:

It's all about the Rab C Nesbitt.

It's a hyperbole. Stereotypes like a lot of sitcom producers use (middleaged man as fat, stupid father -> Simpsons, Family Guy), etc.

It's like asking if you relate with Austin Powers (if I am right to conclude that you are british).

Why on earth would you think Scots would identify with a complete (and very poor) stereotype?

He's not that great of a stereotype. Not wearing kilt that often me thinks, can't remember any episodes with that.--:D

I don't think he sounds too scottish at all.

Scots are British, too. I assume you mean English... [/pedant]

I'm really not sure as the point of your post tbh? Do you think that Willy was supposed to be anything other than a caricature?

Actually, at school some teacher taught us about Britain, and suddenly put on a Simpson episode, so we could learn about the Scots :D
...Guess I'm just curious about stereotypes ;)

Really, your teacher put on the simpsons to teach their class about Scotland? Wow, words fail me.

Stereotypes are just that, they exaggerate the most salient aspects of a particular group or individual, usually those which might be the most recognisable to people but these characteristics are not necessarily the most accurate.
