Time to Check your tyres

Found this cool new tyre pressure checker (for cars in the UK)

http://www.kwik-fit.com/tyre-pressure-search.asp

Just enter your plate number and it tells you the correct pressure for your car - so simple. Much easier then other websites I've used in the past.

Checked my Dad's Car and it was only 24 PSI instead of 31 PSI (over 25%) - quite a difference - having the correct pressure can make huge differences in how many miles per gallon your car gives you and seeing what prices are like today for petrol there's good incentive to check.

:)

Lol - it didn't return anything on my number plate.

Just tried it on my old car, that had private plates - that plate has been on retention for 18 months now too...:

    225/45W18 2.3 BAR 33 PSI 2.5 BAR 36 PSI
    245/35W19 2.3 BAR 33 PSI 2.5 BAR 36 PSI

    Got them wrong.

    Hmmmm!

At first I thought it tells you the pressure that is IN you tires at the moment and was wondering how would they do that? Sensors in the street, that measure contact surface vs weight?

No it's not ... I made the same mistake myself and entered a 0 instead of O for my mum's car plate.

It's actually called being helpful. :)

I'm sure there's a word for people that jump to the wrong conclusion .. any idea what that word is .. :D

No joy here either, must not like two wheelers. I'm used to the bias in society. I guess being a biker makes me a minority :D

Did you bear in mind that if you buy different tires - such as when the old ones wear out and you buy new ones - then the pressures may be different based on the thickness etc of the new tire? Different tires often require different pressures.

I doubt overall there is much difference in the pressure needed in different brands, or new vs old tyres - more if you go for something that wasn't factory recommended.

Anyway just checked my mum's car and her lowest tyre was just 18 PSI when it should have been more like 29 PSI .. that's a huge difference.

BTW anyone good at maths wanna tell me the correct percentage difference?

I either make it around 62% or 38% - not sure which is the correct term to use depending on which way around you're referring to the difference.

Its up to you really you can say it's 38% less than it should be personally I would say it's only filled to 62% of what it should be. heh

There are lots of variables when it comes to tyres but most are to do with size.
i.e bigger tyres require a lower pressure, smaller tyres require higher pressure.

That's a Huuuuuge difference and you can't tell just by looking if a Tyre needs pumping up

You should be able to tell 9 psi by looking/kicking!
