Thought we'd make a thread for all those (useless) sporting questions you always wanted answered. We'll answer one and then someone can ask another. In the events no one knows the answer to a question we'll have to just move on.

I wanna know: Were linesmen used before the offside rule? Were they simply put there to enforce the offside rule or were they already there to be an extra 4 eyes for the ref and help make decisions (ball over the line? Still in play? etc)

Not a clue I'm afraid, does anyone know who scored that goal for Fiorentina 2 (3?) seasons ago whan they were last in the Champions league? It was a overhaed volley from about 45 yards out, it was amazing!

I don't know for sure, but i have a feeling linesman came after the offside rule. The offside rule was introduced very early into football rules, long before the leagues were introduced, whereas linesman are a relatively new introduction

Nope, the grounds are called Arsenal Stadium (Highbury), The Boleyn Ground (Upton Park) and Anfield Road (Anfield). And Newcastle play at St James Park, the difference being the apostrophe...its in Exeter's ground name but not Newcastle's.
