I had an ingrown toenail for several years, although it wasn't because my foot got trodden upon. They are, without doubt, extremely painful. The human body does tend to recover pretty well from these incidents, but there is a risk here. Whilst it's recovering, it's more than possible you won't be able to cut your toenails properly, thus increasing the risk of an ingrown toenail. Also, a lot of bacteria can build around your feet during the day, (being packed away inside shoes and socks gives germs the ultimate breeding ground, after all) so it's much more prone to infection.

I would seriously urge you to get this checked out by your doctor. He or she will almost certainly send you on to a foot specialist (I forget what they're called now) who will be able to advise you accordingly.
