canned goods use by date

i have a can of plum tomatoes that i've found in the cupboard that has a date of august 2007 on, do you think it'll still be ok? its only tomatoes aint it??

or should i open it up and give it a smell

    Id just do the smell/appearance test..if its fluff-free and smells ok then itll be fine..

    It should be OK if it smells OK, but a can of tomatoes is only 40p so why don't you just throw it away?

    My mam used canned/packet stuff thats dated 1999. I'm sure it'll be fine!

    As long as it's got no Botulism bulges :p which isn't caused by foods going out of date I'm sure you'll be fine.

    its in the cupboard, i wanna use it rather than just chuck it away if i can. dont like to waste food really.

    its been put off till tomorrow but i'll post my findings when i open it, unless i die from the effects.

    I take no notice. I was brought up on out of date stuff. If the cans still whole and sealed, they can practically last forever in my experience.

    Food in cans comes cooked and then it is irradiated to kill bacteria. You should be ok, the dates are normally BBE dates anyway.

    40p?? What sort of gourmet tinned tomatoes do You buy, mine cost about 16p.
