    Yeah, change GPs.

CBT is usually available through local mental health services and/or counselling services. Sadly GPs don't pay enough attention to this or try to fob people off because the waits can be very high...

she said i had to have an official diagnosis of a mental illness to be referred from the GP - she was a locum btw and doesnt know the area so couldnt recommend someone to go private with.

im trying an online cbt thingy (moodgym) which seems ok but if i get stuck (eg - list 10 occasions this week when youve done something nice for youself) then im stuck - noone to help!

The locum probably can't do much. I had CBT for a year and a half, so was was very lucky, as the usual amount of time is 8 - 12 weeks. I guess the first step for me, was seeing my GP, and he referred me to the Mental health services. There was a long wait, but because my problems were quite severe, we wrote to the local MP, and got it within 8 weeks. It's really useful and helped me a lot, however, its such an in-demand service that there is long waits, and it's impossible to avoid that.
Your GP is right though; because of the demand for it, they often reserve it for people with diagnosed illnesses. Another option could be NHS counselling maybe?
Just keep pressing the issue if you need it.
    Hope that helps.

I was lucky too. my gp got me to see a psychotherapist within a few weeks. She visited the surgery once a week. I saw her weekly for about a year.

If your going private you can find some suitable therapists here. Just look for one who specialises in CBT, quite a few do. There is another good resource website, which is saved in my favourties on my old laptop. I will post the link for you soon as.

If your going via the NHS, I really dont know how it works. Sorry
