Lower Ab Workout

Here's the problem I've been having: I'm a relatively thin guy, but my upper legs are fairly built because I'm a hockey player. When I do leg lifts in the manner everyone suggests (hands under butt, back against floor, etc.) my legs are so heavy that my upper body rises off the ground and my back is taking most of the muscular strain instead of my abs. Awkward, yes. Irritating, very.

I don't have a gym membership and I prefer to keep my workouts at home, but I can buy a small sit-up bench if I absolutely must. Are there any lower ab exercises that I can do without gym equipment besides basic leg lifts?
