i went to my college interview the other day and i decided i want to do 1b-tech natonal deploma in ict, leval 3 over 2years fall time course (worth 4 A levals) and then go back for 2years and do 4 Alevals in pychology socilogy maths and history
this means leaving college at 20 and staying there for 4 years. does this sound crazy or not? but i know if i do this and pass ill get into uni easily.

I will be aiming for a distinction in my B-tech
How will you feel in two years after finishing a BTEC, with all your mates going to uni, or into employment, while you go right back to the start again with people two years younger than you?
You'd also have worked for double the qualifications you need to go to uni, and that would probably not benefit you anyway.
i know i will be but that doesnt bother me:) it will give me the chance and choices to do what i want.. i just unsure about it a little i mean two yrs at college and also its something fall back on:)
Not necessarily true. I'm doing psych at Nottingham and haven't done it before. Psych A-level is not an entry requirement for most (if not all) of the country's psychology courses yet...in fact Nottingham told us they prefer to 'start from scratch' with people and choose applicants who have a wider range of A-levels.
Oh.
Well either way it's completely bonkers to waste the extra years doing both the Btec and A-Levels. And you would have to pay for one or the other.
sounds like a good opertunity because i will have more freedom to choose what i do.
i went back to college at the age of 23!! there are people of all ages in my class and it doesnt make a difference. my friends are all working and it doesnt make a difference that im at college.
rude boy you have to do what you want to do, stop seeking other peoples approval!
It will bother you when people disappear off to uni and work and you're still in college.
There's no need to spend so many years getting pre-uni qualifications, and you're better off doing A-levels because of the breadth offered. Unis prefer it, employers prefer it unless you're heading into ITC fields, but why close options? Uni will give you a chance to study your favourite subject seriously in depth, no need to start too early.
can i ask what is so wrong with being at college? why will it be such a bother to have friends workin and at uni?
Clearly because you have to watch your friends go off and do things whilst you stand still effectively progress wise.
how can you say being at college is not progressing????
with anything you learn you progress! i am at college and im damn sure that i have progressed over a year and a half. i know more things now than when i started. i do not plan to go on to uni when i am qualified as a nursery nurse. does that mean i will stand still for the rest of my life.
i work damn hard at college and am progressing!
Fine. Such is your choice. Personally I think that for most things apart from some specialist jobs where you need specific stuff then an employer will see a university degree as more of a progression than staying in college.
Why do you 'NEED' a b-tec in ICT?
That really wasn't the point I was trying to make. I progressed on my gap year, too, but I found it difficult with my friends having dispersed around the country, got on with their lives whilst I felt very much that mine was standing still. It's not a question of intellectual progression, but simply taking another step through life - you invariably feel you're missing out when you're the last one to take a big step.
What happens if you decide you don't want to do it?
Why not spend two years doing A-levels first, and then if you still need an ICT qualification, you can get one in uni.
I agree, I'm doing a third year at college and 'cause people generally do 2, I'm like, all lonely. I find it okay to make new friends etc, but I just don't feel like I fit in
When my close friends went, it was hard - but I've got used to it.
I'm just looking forward to going myself now
There was no way I could of gone with my 2 A-levels, and looking back, I don't think I was ready. I didn't even know what course I wanted to do, so it would of been no good going last year
Also , it depends what type of uni you're off to, but uni's don't generally say "you have to have so and so in BTEC ICT"
exactly what i thought.
do one or the other. i'd recommend A levels over a BTEC, they are still seen as 'better' qualitfications, but either will do.
there's no point staying at college for so long when you don't need to, and your local council support for further and higher education will run out after so long. with my council it's 4 years. after that you have to pay the private amount, which at my uni is over £2000 a year.
something to think about.
