milk "sell by" date

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
if a thing of milk says sell by oct 31... does that mean it just has to be sold by then and it is still good? like could you still put it in your cereal on nov 2?

look for the "use by" date.

oh, and sniff it. If it stinks, it's generally off.

Your nose will have the answer to that question ... if you want to stop milk going bad for a few more extra days then you have to boil it to kill the bacteria that is in it .. also recommended for people with IBS.

I've often drank milk that's one or two days past it's "best before" date. If there are no lumps in it then it usually hasn't gone bad yet. :) I usually only see when my milk has gone bad, I don't smell it. But then again, I may be weird. =^.^=

store milk (like tescos) has two dates:

Display until: the date the shop can sell the milk up until.

Use by: The date that the milk can be guarenteed to be good until. After that it may still be okay but its at yor disgrestion.

    give it a whiff!

I'd go by the use by date, which I've found to be quite accurate (ie, it goes off the day after almost all the time).

Use by date  Although don't leave it too long.

I once drank half a tall glass of milk before I breathed in and realised it smelt bad, it was only then I realised that it tasted funny too. I was nearly sick I tell ya.

I would go by the 'use by' date, but it should still be ok if it's only 1-3 days after it's expired, but I usually don't drink milk because I'm lactose and tolerant, but once and a while, I will eat a bowl of cereal with some milk, but not very often.
