Painful Scar

When I was 5 years old I had a hernia operation. As result of this I have a rather large scar that recently has been painful.
I get a sharp stabbing pain in the scar for a few seconds and then it disappears.
Anyone any views/ideas/help?
And before you ask I have an appointment with doc but wanted to know if anyone had any views before hand.

Be casreful of being offered a hernia operation - doctors often see them as great opportunity to train the student doctors.
There is a new type of operation that means the patitent is goog to go within 24 hours - they use a mesh
The old type means you're in bed for 3 months - my dad went for some basic operation and whilst being checked the doctor said - you've got a hernia - shall we do that at the same time?
Never bothered to mention the part about huge amounts of pain and not being bale to work for 3 months.
