Hiya, I just completed my online interview for the bbc journalism apprenticeship I applied for which is part of their bbc extend which is aimed for neurodivergent people to get into tv and film

@Amy22 well done. That's absolutely incredible and you should be very proud of yourself. How do you think you did with it?

Honestly to be fair I winged it but I had a go and that is what counts. If I was able to get the apprenticeship it would mean a lot because it would give me an entry into TV and film again. Also, I'm still doing my internship over at a company near me in their marketing department. So if I didn't get the apprenticeship I still got a chance of being taken on over in the marketing department instead.

@Amy22 you miss all the shots you don't take. I reckon you've done amazing at it. And it sounds like you've got a whole load of plans just in case. Wishing you the best of luck with it Amy.

Aw thank you so much. To be fair I tend to just apply and hope for the best really because at the moment with todays job market, employment ain't that great for young people myself included. I've got plans for what I could also do instead but still unsure really what I ideally want to do after my internship ends. Plus that and my tutor has just left as well because he's relocating to the other scheme that is run in the hospital. So he will be looking after the other interns. We got a new tutor and she is lovely. I met her the other day and she's very nice. Hopefully she doesn't do too many things last minute like my other tutor did because he had a tendency to rush through things with us.

Basically the scheme I am on is aimed at young neurodivergent individuals who want to get into employment but don't know where to start. It's mainly aimed towards autistic adults to help gain the skills needed for full time employment.

@Amy22 yeah, it is a brutal job market right now isn't it. But it's amazing that your jumping at whatever opportunity you get. Hopefully it all works out well for you, and you land it, cause you honestly do deserve chances like these to succeed.

Aww thank you. I just want to do something I enjoy to be fair.

Great to hear @Amy22 hope it goes well for you.

Aw thank you. I winged it to be fair lol.

I winged my interview to my asda internship and I am doing it right now. To be fair though, its asda and not the bbc.

That's still good though you tried and had a go. Because it's all about having gi and trying. I did an application once for tesco too once and even Morrisons. Good luck though I'm sure it will go super well.

I think its going well but we will see if I have work by June.

@so_very_tired I've got both my fingers and toes crossed for you. Even if you don't get it, there's still time and lots of other amazing opportunities as well eventhough I am aware of how bleak the employment market is at the moment. But im sure you will find something you like and also enjoy.

Thanks for the support @Amy22. I am hopeful this will lead to paid work but I wouldn't be surprised if I was let go the moment my internship ends. I have heard people with disabilities with basically being used for free labour and being imminently let go they ask for pay. But I will find out by June or maybe earlier because I could very get pay while I'm doing my internship, hopefully if that happens I can ask for more hours or another day.

@Nemuritai just seen that you're doing a readathon tomorrow - that's so cool! How are you feeling for it? Is that something you do in a specific place, or maybe it can be at home too?

Hey @so_very_tired , how are you doing? Thank you for your post. What you've described about how you know of people with disabilities being used for free labor and being immediately let go if ask for pay sounds deeply unjust, saddening, and frustrating. How are you feeling about your own journey after the internship, and I wonder how supported you've been feeling in the circle of people who know you, whether that's fellow colleagues, friends, or family?

Aw thanks @Sian321  I'm feeling excited, and kind of nervous to be honest, though I'm sure it'll go well. It's organised by an online community of Japanese learners so everyone will be reading as much as they can at home that day, which I'm really looking forward to. It's only recently that I've begun reading proper books in the language but I'm really proud of my progress

@River , ahh I'm so sorry to hear about the injury. That sounds so painful first and foremost, and also, extremely hard I can imagine to not be able to do ariel. I know that's something you really enjoy and that's been so helpful for you over the years. How are you doing mental health wise at this time? We're here with you, and I wish you a speedy recovery!

Thanks for the support @Amy22. I am hopeful this will lead to paid work but I wouldn't be surprised if I was let go the moment my internship ends. No worries that's what I'm here for and I say the same for everyone else on here too because everyone deserves support no matter how big or little the situation.

I know that feeling too especially with the recent news story of an autistic man being denied paid work when he volunteered at a waitrose. However, he did eventually win his case and now he is being paid which is something. Unfortunately, and quite often the case for a lot neurodivergent and disabled folk securing paid employment often comes with a huge challenge. That challenge being actually paid and not being used to just do free labour. I totally understand how you are feeling but I know how much a paid internship would mean to you right now. The main thing is to keep trying. Even if you didn't get the internship, there will still be plenty of opportunities. I know this sounds cheesy but please don't give your hopes up just yet because I know eventually something good will come out of it.

I totally know the feeling of neurodivergent people being used as a free labour, as I question this a lot to be fair everyday. I often find when it comes to finding work for myself, it tends to be the case they will let me volunteer but often when I asked for paid roles they haven't been much. Then again with the current job market at the moment being unstable, a lot of young people have been finding it hard to secure work. Im always here if you want to chat more about this too <3.

I believe that if your neurodivergent or disabled etc you should be able to do paid work because your a human being and you deserves rights too as well.

A really good website that I use when looking for companies that are inclusive and disability-confident employers is the website Evenbreak. Evenbreak will show you companies that are inclusive and offer support for individuals as well. I use it a lot for finding work.
