Anything new at the cinema?

KatieKatie Community Manager Posts: 1,040 Wise Owl
Howdy community,

As you may know I'm a HUGE cinema lover, but I'm not sure what's going to be coming out soon. I feel a little out the loop!

Is anyone looking forward to any films in particular? Any recommendations?

I'm fancying some popcorn and a big pepsi max with a good film!

Ahh yes I can't wait for the new Wicked!! That's out in the winter right @River ?

And the new superhero film you're thinking of might be the new Superman! I think I'll give that a watch - the cast looks good!

The superhero film is where there’s like 4 of them that are saving the planet or something, they have blue costumes

I have @Sian321 ! I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and I do love Jodie Colmer she's such a good actress! @DonnerKebab did you end up going to see it?

I've decided I'm going to go see the new Superman tonight! Anyone else planning on seeing it?

@Katie I did go to see it 28 years later and I loved it. Not as good as the first movie I reckon, but it definitely comes close to it. There's so much that I only pieced together about the film afterwards though but i don't want to spoil anything.

Have you watched any of the other 28 days later films?

@DonnerKebab and @Katie ahhh I really want to give it a watch. The cast looks fantastic! How scary / horror-ey would you say it is scale of 1-5? hahaha

@DonnerKebab , I must admit I haven't seen any of the others! Would you recommend going back and starting with those before the new one?

28 years later definitely looks interesting, I need to watch the first film first which I believe is on bbc iplayer. There's also how to train your dragon live action which I'm thinking of going to see because I've heard good things about it. Also superman looks fantastic and it's directed by James gunn too. Also fantastic four looks interesting and hopefully good because Pedro pascal is in it and he is such a fantastic brilliant actor. Megan 2.0 is another one which is a horror I believe.
Just a person who likes pop culture and films

@Sian321 I would say it's a 2 or a 3, but it's mostly gore rather than anything else (not as gory as the first 2). The rage zombies is just one aspect of the story, the majority of it is mostly character focused development. It's not just a mindless zombie story, it's a lot more developed than that if that makes sense. I think the most accurate thing i've heard it be described as is a coming of age story.

Ralph Fiennes is really good in it as well, and Jack O'Connell's character is.... interesting to say the least.

And the first 2 films aren't really needed to be able to understand everything, the film explains everything you need to know pretty well, and is pretty disconnected from them, so you can still understand everything without watching them. It's also not as gory as the previous 2 films.

Okay, I love character development so I think it definitely sounds like it would be up my street! Thank you @DonnerKebab !!

@Amy22 the first two films aren't needed to be able to understand the most recent one, it explains everything pretty well without them, but i do recommend watching them. Especially the first, just because it's so good. It's a slightly scarier and more gruesome movie though, but has some of the best scenes of any horror film. There's one scene halfway through the first film that's arguably the most heart-breaking scene ever as well. The first one is on iPlayer as you said, so well worth a watch.

And 100% James Gunn is an amazing director. Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2 were just next level cinema. If Superman is anything like the other films he's done, then it's going to be amazing.

Yes I watched them just before the new one! The 28 days later one is obviously the best - but I did really like the characters in 28 years later. They were so unique and each had their own quirks. Definitely agree on Ralph Fiennes too. I can't wait to learn more about his character (I think in the next one?)

What are your thoughts on there being a couple more movies in the series @DonnerKebab ? I can't wrap my head around how it's basically 2 trilogies ? I don't know I don't understand it - why isn't it just one long series

yesss let us know what you think of how to train your dragon @Amy22 !

I think I'm going to give Megan 2.0 a miss - whilst I found the first one entertaining I just don't think they're great films in my opinion !

@Katie 28 days is still the greatest. You know, i genuinely think that scene with Frank is one of the best in the history of horror films. And 28 years has the best character development out of all of them. Fully with you on that. And i've seen some rather dark theories about Jack O'Connell's character. I think the next one is 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple which is out in 6 months roughly, which will explain a lot more about that ending. I think it's rather dark though from the theories i've seen. There's a reason they all are dressed like that and are wearing blonde wigs that look like... well.... you know.

And honestly, i don't really see them as a trilogy. 28 days, weeks and years i don't see as a linked trilogy. They all show different characters, different stages of the outbreak with very little connecting them besides the fact they are in the same post apocalypse. And even that is tricky, because the ending of 28 weeks sort of contradicts 28 years later (there's a single small moment that clarifies the ending though that most people miss though in 28 years). So i see them as independent from one another, just showing the evolution of the UK during the stages, from outbreak, to attempted rebuilding, to long term survival. Besides the fact it's the same UK and rage virus outbreak, nothing really connects the first 3 films together outside of that. Not characters, not locations, not even time periods. The new trilogy though is closely linked together.

    Spoilers:
28 years later shows Jimmy during the initial outbreak and sets him up for the next film, and introduces the new world 28 years later. The next film will build of that, and no doubt the film after will. And will be a lot more connected and in a trilogy.

I can 100% see a 28 years later trilogy, just not the 28 days, 28 weeks and 28 years later films as a trilogy together.

PS. Sorry for the long reply

Yeah I know exactly what you mean about Jack's character @DonnerKebab I haven't looked up the theories but I do wonder why they're all dressed like...that guy y'know. I'm very intrigued why they've decided to take it there

Also whilst we're on Jack did you watch Sinners? He was so good in that - big film year for him!

I get your thoughts on the trilogy too - your thinking makes a lot of sense. I'm definitely looking forward to the next couple of films and finding out more about the outbreak! Aaron-Taylor Johnson was also brilliant may I add and very nice to look at

No worries at all about the long reply! I love movie talk

Also I wouldn't say I'm a major superhero fan or anything but since watching Superman on Sunday I can't stop thinking about it. It was very fun !

Ahh I'm not into F1 myself but I've heard so many good things about the film @sinead276 ! Do you think you need to understand F1 to see it or are things explained?

Superman was real fun I would recommend! And I'm going to see I Know What You Did Last Summer on Saturday - I might need a lil recap on the previous films though first
