Hey everyone! Off the back of today's Saturday Topic Thread all about 'Coping With Procrastination', I wanted to create a new thread so that we can keep the conversation flowing and support one another around this, as it sounds like so many of us struggle with procrastination in one way or another.

So, what is procrastination?
Procrastination is when you avoid doing something—even if you really want or need to get it done. Instead, you might scroll, snack, nap, or suddenly decide now is the perfect time to deep-clean your sock drawer!! It’s something most of us do from time to time, and it’s not about being lazy. It’s usually a way our brain tries to protect us from something that feels uncomfortable, boring, stressful, or overwhelming.

Why does it happen?
Procrastination shows up for all kinds of reasons. Maybe you're scared of not doing something perfectly or 'right', worried about what people might think, scared of faliure, or you're overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Sometimes it’s because the task feels too big, or you’re just mentally exhausted. Our brains are wired to avoid discomfort—and procrastinating can feel like temporary relief. But underneath it all, it's usually not about the task itself—it's about how the task makes us feel.

Does procrastination only apply to study or work?
Nope! Procrastination can happen with anything. It might be replying to texts, booking an appointment, tidying your room, or even starting something fun that feels emotionally heavy—like journaling or starting a painting. If there’s something you’re avoiding, and it’s making you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or a little guilty… that’s procrastination too. It’s not just about school or jobs—it’s part of being human. and often this feeling comes up around the things that really matter to us. The things that feel high-stakes.

How does it link to mental health?
Procrastination is often tied to what’s going on emotionally. Things like anxiety, burn-out, depression, low self-esteem, or past trauma can all make it harder to get started. When you’re feeling low or anxious, everyday tasks can feel huge.

How can I cope with it?
The first step is often self-compassion. You're not broken or lazy—you’re just human, and your brain is doing its best to cope. Try breaking tasks into tiny steps, giving yourself credit for any progress, and noticing how you talk to yourself. Be kind. Often, just acknowledging that something feels hard can take away some of the pressure. And remember: you’re not alone. We all put things off sometimes—it’s not a flaw, it’s part of the ride.

What helps YOU with procrastination? When you're avoiding starting something, whats that about for you? We'd love to hear and to keep supporting each other below.

Need a pep-talk to help you begin a task you're procrastinating? We've got you covered......

    Okay, deep breath.

You're not lazy. You're not broken. You're not "bad at focusing."
You're a human—a very capable one, by the way—facing a hard thing. And sometimes the brain tries to protect you by pushing you toward comfort. That’s procrastination. But you know what?

You don’t need to finish everything today. You just need to start.

    Start small. Really small.
Open the book. Type one sentence. Set a 5-minute timer. That’s all.
Because action creates momentum. And momentum? That’s your secret power!

The resistance you're feeling right now? That’s the sign you're close to something that matters. It means the task is worth doing.

You’ve done hard things before. You are so capable.

So let’s go. Not perfectly. Not all at once.

    Because, this isn't about perfection.
    This is about commitment.
To your goal. To your future self.

    You’re not too late.
    You’re not too far behind.
You’re exactly where you need to be—to begin.

    Just forward.
One tiny, brave step at a time.
