cups, bowls, cutlery, bassic kitchen utensils (if self catering)
hot water bottle, extra duvet and duvet cover (at my Uni they dont change the duvet during the whole term )
a few posters (but not millions), WHITE-tac (not blue, a lot of unis dont like that as it marks the walls), a calendar
an alarm clock, a stereo, your CDs (take all, as the one you leave behind will be the one you *need* to listen to)
Thats about it really, but its only March so dont worry yet
Don't take loads of cooking stuff, like my flat mates. You don't need a whole set of cutlery and crockery, just a few of each, that way you will be forced to do the washing up.
oh and a bottle of JD
(edited because I can't spell )

I recommend firstly a weeks worth of clothes - that way you wont accumulate 2 weeks of washin' .
Next a stereo. Music is an absolute must to relieve uni blues! You will also probably want a pc (laptop if you have one), as most courses require one, and uni pc's are generally shite.
Some hall rooms need a lamp, depends on the quality of your hall. Otherwise pleanty of posters can be useful (though you can buy these AT uni).
From a year of experience I chose to keep the amount I took to uni in my second year down to a suitcase of clothes and a suitcase of odds and sods (as well as Stereo and PC).
I would suggest not taking a TV because:
a. It will be an arse to transport if its particularly bulky.
b. Halls of residence have TV rooms, the only problem being trying to persuade everyone else to turn over to Buffy the Vampire Slayer when they are all watching Crappyoaks.
c. TV liscences cost a fortune.
I would take as little as possible: Toiletries, stationary, bedding, basic cooking utensils (even in catered halls you might want to do yourself some supper when you get home at 2am after a night out) and a radio/cassette/CD player.
We have to pay over the holidays, it's actually crap-ok so you can keep your stuff there, but you end up paying for severl months when you're not there. CARDIFF UNI-RIP OFF MERCHANTS!!!!
A clothes horse, as there is never enough room on your flatmates, or the tiny little radiator you may be lucky enough to get.
Clothes (the heating rarely works)
bedding
corkscrew (essential)
basic food items to get going
alarm clock
music system and music (essential)
lamp (essential)
adaptor plug (there are never enough sockets)
extension lead (see above)
notice board (if there isn't one in your room already)
plate, bowl, cutlery, saucepan, frying pan, mug... enough to get by, not start your own restaurant.
hot water bottle
computer - if you can afford it, saves on queues at deadline time
TV (again if can afford it)
towels
teatowel
washing powder
lots of passport photos
NI details
passport
birth certificate
National Health Registration card
room insurance
and so on and so on

No! NOOOOOO! UCLAN! NOOOO! We will so paste your arses in the Lancs cup next year...
Sorry, got carried away there .
Don't worry about the TV License too much. I never had one, and as a rule the hall porters let you know when the scan-van's around.
The one massively important thing that you'll need: A sarnie toaster. These are absolutely the best way to cure the midnight/post binge munchies. Comet do a really cool Cow-shaped one for about a tenner.
Have fun, take care of yourself.

We're so good to you
How do you actually pick them?
P.S. I know you are giving away a fridge, well don't they give off fumes that make it dangerous to sleep in the same room as a fridge?
Don't be so nosy - obviously it is done fairly and this is top secret classified information
*knows who won't be winning the prizes*
Essential for making new friends is a bottle opener! Also take white tack, posters, photos of your mates back home and clothes pegs.
Oh and having a few good CD's for freshers' week party!!!
Makes the whole thing that much easier
Or Just Alcohol which can do the same thing
Thankyou
