fairies and folklore

Unfortunately what first comes to mind for most when fairies are involved is extreme femininity.

It is unfortunate that fairies are automatically attributed to females, frills, and pink glitter. Especially considering their more gender neutral (and sometimes malicious) origins.

Queen Mab is definitely not pink and fluffy

I misread the last word as "organs" at first and wondered how an organ can be malicious... That makes more sense.

It's not just fairies. You also get more mermaids than mermen (this word isn't even in the spell checker), witches instead of wizards and so on.

Ogres, trolls, orcs etc etc are almost enitirely thought of as male.
Dwarves in folklore almost always have beards, though Im not sure that this is because they are male or because lady dwarves have beards too.

Terry Pratchet deals with the issues of follore and gender in his Discworld book involving the Night Watch.
