Life for having a dangerous dog?

The maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving is 14 years and careless 5 years. Is this proposal to raise the maximum sentance for having a dangerous dog uncontrolledl, even on a private property, a bit over the top?

Death through dangerous or careless driving isn't quite the same as having a dangerous animal and allowing it to kill someone. FWIW I think death through dangerous driving should have the same penalty as manslaughter too.
I'm pretty sure the reason it was scrapped was because it was mostly ignored anyway? If it was enforced then I can't help but wonder if it will just increase the number of abandoned dogs and put even more strain on rehoming charities. It's a tough one, but I know people that work in rehoming centers and they say the amount of people that don't think it through and do their research is astounding. The dog ends up poorly trained/socialised which can increase aggression. The owners then decide they can't cope so give it up. Also a girl at the interview I went to last week worked at an RSPCA center and said 80% of the dogs they got were staffies or some kind of staffie.
